Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has criticized Jos\u00e9 Mourinho for attacking the character of Vin\u00edcius J\u00fanior after the Real Madrid star accused an opponent of racially insulting him during a Champions League match. <\/p>\n
Benfica coach Mourinho suggested that Brazil forward Vin\u00edcius had incited Benfica\u2019s players with his celebrations after scoring the only goal in Tuesday\u2019s playoff match. <\/p>\n
Vin\u00edcius accused Benfica\u2019s Gianluca Prestianni of calling him \u201cmonkey\u201d during a confrontation after his goal. <\/p>\n
Mourinho also questioned why Vin\u00edcius, who is Black and has been subjected to repeated racist insults in Spain, was so frequently targeted. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere is something wrong because it happens in every stadium,\u201d Mourinho said. \u201cThe stadium where Vin\u00edcius played something happened. Always.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking on Friday, Kompany condemned Mourinho\u2019s comments. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo after the game you have the leader of an organization, Jos\u00e9 Mourinho, who attacks the character of Vin\u00edcius J\u00fanior by bringing in the type of celebration to discredit what Vin\u00edcius is doing in this moment,\u201d Kompany said. \u201cAnd for me in terms of leadership, it\u2019s a huge mistake and it\u2019s something that we should not accept.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mourinho\u2019s celebrations<\/p>\n
UEFA appointed a special investigator on Wednesday to gather evidence about what happened in Lisbon in Madrid\u2019s 1-0 win in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs. Madrid said it had sent \u201call available evidence\u201d of the alleged incident to European soccer\u2019s governing body. <\/p>\n
Referring to Vin\u00edcius\u2019 celebrations after curling a shot into the top corner, Mourinho said he should \u201ccelebrate in a respectful way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kompany pointed out Mourinho\u2019s own history of exuberant celebrations \u2014 such as when he ran down the sideline to cheer when his Porto team beat Manchester United in the Champions League. <\/p>\n
Kompany said Mourinho\u2019s former players \u201clove him\u201d and added \u201cI know he\u2019s a good person.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t need to judge him as a person, but I know what I\u2019ve heard. I understand maybe what he\u2019s done, but he\u2019s made a mistake and it\u2019s something that hopefully in the future won\u2019t happen like this again,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
Prestianni denied racially insulting Vin\u00edcius. Benfica said the Argentine player was the victim of a \u201cdefamation campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Right thing to do\u2019<\/p>\n
Kompany said Vin\u00edcius\u2019 reaction \u201ccannot be faked.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can see it \u2014 his reaction is an emotional reaction. I don\u2019t see any benefit for him to go to the referee and put all this misery on his shoulders,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is absolutely no reason for Vini Junior to go and do this. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think in his mind he\u2019s doing it more because it\u2019s the right thing to do in that moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kompany added: \u201cYou have a player who\u2019s complaining. You have a player who says he didn\u2019t do it. And I think unless the player himself comes forward, it\u2019s difficult. It\u2019s a difficult case.\u201d<\/p>\n
