{"id":488556,"date":"2026-02-20T22:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T22:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/488556\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T22:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T22:14:11","slug":"7-eleven-bringing-viral-japanese-style-egg-salad-sandwich-to-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/488556\/","title":{"rendered":"7-Eleven bringing viral Japanese-style egg salad sandwich to Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a sandwich foodies have flown thousands of kilometres to Japan to try and have strategized how to get through customs to share with friends back home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Though it sells for just a few bucks and comes wrapped in plastic, it even got the stamp of approval from late food journalist Anthony Bourdain who labelled it \u201cpillows of love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sandwich \u2014 a tamago sando, or Japanese-style\u00a0egg\u00a0salad\u00a0sandwich \u2014 comes from 7-Eleven, one of the world\u2019s biggest convenience store chains.<\/p>\n<p>The treat, which nestles a generous heap of cooked eggs and Kewpie mayonnaise between fluffy pieces of crustless milk bread, is about to make its way to Canada on March 4.<\/p>\n<p>But for 7-Eleven, it\u2019s much more than a sandwich. It\u2019s a small part of a broader, five-year push to deepen the chain\u2019s presence in Canada and help it grow in an environment where everyone is now their competitor.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe industry just generally has blurred,\u201d Marc Goodman, vice-president and general manager of 7-Eleven Canada, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Business Matters: Canada\u2019s Couche-Tard looks to buy owner of 7-Eleven'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/BIZ_AUG_19.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:10<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBusiness Matters: Canada\u2019s Couche-Tard looks to buy owner of 7-Eleven\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>That means the convenience stores you might have popped into for a chocolate bar are now facing competition from Walmart, which has plunked itself in every city with more than 10,000 people, and other discount stores, where treats are a very low price, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the mix are grocery stores with expanded snack sections and more ready-to-go meals than ever, food trucks that can pop up in front of the busiest office districts and fast-food chains welcoming walk-in customers and others requesting meals through delivery apps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo more and more we\u2019ve been seeing the external environment trying to take a piece of our pie, if you would,\u201d Goodman said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Never was that more true than over the last two years, when Alimentation Couche-Tard, the Laval, Que.-based convenience store goliath also behind Circle K and Ingo, tried to purchase 7-Eleven parent company Seven &amp; i Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Seven &amp; i\u2019s board initially rebuffed Couche-Tard\u2019s overtures but then the Quebec firm sweetened its deal and the two met at the table to discuss how a sale could get regulatory approval. For example, 7-Eleven Canada ships in its samosas from India and has hundreds of stores where crispy chicken is battered on site and croissants and cookies are baked. There are also four commissaries the company runs in Canada where it makes food that is then sent immediately to stores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we talk about this in five years\u2019 time, hopefully, we\u2019ll see a higher degree of fresh food sales and hot food sales, and proprietary beverage sales, than we have today,\u201d Goodman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd while we\u2019ll still have our traditional convenience store items, that will take a back seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of its new stars will come from Japan.
