Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman isn\u2019t interested in discussing why he didn\u2019t re-sign with the Red Sox this winter.<\/p>\n

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy recently spoke about the organization\u2019s failure to retain the 31-year-old in free agency earlier this year. Kennedy implied that Bregman chose to leave Boston when speaking with reporters in Florida this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Alex Bregman wanted to be here, ultimately he\u2019d be here,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/a><\/p>\n

Kennedy\u2019s decision to publicly offer Boston\u2019s perspective on the Bregman front, over one month after Bregman signed a contract with the Cubs, drew plenty of online attention. Fans have offered their opinions and then some since Kennedy spoke, but Bregman said he doesn\u2019t want to offer a rebuttal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just really don\u2019t want to get into it,\u2019\u2019 Bregman told USA Today\u2019s Bob Nightengale<\/a> when asked if he would have stayed with the Red Sox if the organization matched the Cubs\u2019 offer. \u201cIt\u2019s not worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bregman received a no-trade clause from Chicago, something Boston left out of their offer. Having that no-trade protection was important to Bregman, so he left the Red Sox after one season.<\/p>\n

However, Bregman said his decision to sign with the Cubs didn\u2019t solely have to do with the fact that they gave him the no-trade clause. He declined to go into detail.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was more than just that,\u201d Bregman said.<\/p>\n

In September last year, Kennedy confidently told WEEI<\/a> that both Boston and Bregman wanted to remain together in 2026. He had a much different tune five months ago compared to the present day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019ll all take care of itself,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cHe wants to be here, we want him to be here, and I\u2019ll leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Red Sox reportedly believed Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, were bluffing when the camp told Boston they had a better offer than the one they provided this winter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Red Sox were confident they had the highest bid, and thought they\u2019d (be) bidding against themselves,\u201d Nightingale wrote. \u201cSo, basically, it was (a) take-it-or-leave-it offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBregman left it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Kennedy\u2019s comments from September about Bregman wanting to stay a Red Sox, Bregman said he actually wasn\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know, I really didn\u2019t know,\u201d Bregman said. \u201cI obviously loved my time there. Love all of the guys there. Love AC [manager Alex Cora]. I\u2019ll always cherish it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A right quad strain Bregman suffered in May sidelined him until just before MLB\u2019s All-Star break, but the 3B was an extremely important part of the 2025 Red Sox\u2019 story.<\/p>\n

On the field, he batted .273 with an .822 OPS, 18 home runs (team\u2019s third-most), and 62 RBI. Bregman drew 51 walks and committed nine errors at third (.969 fielding percentage). It would be difficult for most players to fill former face of the franchise Rafael Devers\u2019s shoes in the starting lineup and positionally, but Bregman did that when healthy.<\/p>\n

Off the field, Bregman took it upon himself to essentially coach young players like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. His veteran status, history of winning, and leadership qualities made him interested in getting the most out of Boston\u2019s young core during his brief tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s like a coach, really,\u201d Mayer told The Athletic\u2019s Jen McCaffrey<\/a> last July. \u201cI can\u2019t really say enough of how much he\u2019s helped not only me and Roman, but the whole team. He has people coming in early and watching film, whether that\u2019s me, [Jarren] Duran or whoever it may be. And I think he just sees the game at a super advanced level compared to most people.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Anthony said he appreciated Bregman\u2019s help, though it wasn\u2019t necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t have to go out and help Marcelo and me, but he goes out of his way to do it, and that\u2019s why he\u2019s a winner,\u201d Anthony said.<\/p>\n

McCaffrey also noted that Bregman didn\u2019t just aid rookies, but also veterans like himself. Trevor Story also identified times when Bregman gave his perspective on Story\u2019s hitting approach.<\/p>\n

Bregman is on to Chicago, though. The Cubs boast a talented, young squad, too, and Bregman said he\u2019s excited to play with them.<\/p>\n

But, there are no hard feelings on Bregman\u2019s end when it comes to the Red Sox.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying at Fenway is unbelievable,\u201d Bregman says. \u201cThe fans in Boston are unbelievable. My teammates were incredible. I\u2019ll be a fan of theirs for life. I loved playing for AC and the coaching staff there. They mean a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
