Sloane May, a\u00a0forward\u00a0from Hamilton Southeastern High School\u00a0in Fishers, Indiana, flipped her\u00a0commitment\u00a0from\u00a0Michigan\u00a0to Indiana women\u2019s soccer, according to an\u00a0Instagram post<\/a>\u00a0Feb. 13.\u00a0May\u2019s\u00a0decision came after a\u00a0coaching change\u00a0at\u00a0Michigan,\u00a0Indiana head coach Josh Rife said in an interview with the Indiana Daily Student on Feb. 19.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

May, the 2025 United Soccer Coaches National High School Player of the Year, led the Royals to their first IHSAA State Championship in November\u00a02025, finishing her senior season with 15 goals and 17 assists.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHer soccer ability is pretty clear,\u201d\u00a0Rife said. \u201cYou\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0earn the attention and accolades she has without that being a huge part of it. But what really excites us is the person she is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the field, May\u2019s arrival comes at a pivotal moment\u00a0for the Hoosiers. Indiana scored 21 goals in 17 matches last season \u2014 tied for the third fewest in the Big Ten \u2014 during a campaign defined more by defensive structure than\u00a0scoring\u00a0output.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rife was candid about the challenge of improving in the final third.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cScoring goals is the hardest thing to do in soccer,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s always easier to destroy than create.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

May\u2019s versatility, he added, could be key to solving that problem.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She can\u00a0operate\u00a0as an attacking midfielder, drive forward from deeper areas, play with her back to goal as a forward or stretch\u00a0defense\u00a0from wide positions, Rife said.\u00a0That positional flexibility gives Indiana options with its lineups.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have someone who can play multiple spots, it allows you to figure out how to get your most exciting players out there and still keep them dangerous,\u201d Rife said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her addition also strengthens an incoming class that already includes two of her former Hamilton Southeastern teammates,\u00a0defender\u00a0Blair\u00a0Satterfield\u00a0and\u00a0forward\u00a0Riley Boyd. The trio\u2019s familiarity could fast-track chemistry at the collegiate\u00a0level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He\u00a0noted the genuine enthusiasm within the locker room when May\u2019s commitment became official,\u00a0a sign\u00a0\u2014\u00a0he believes\u00a0\u2014\u00a0of a healthy competitive culture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSome teams might get nervous when top talent comes in,\u201d Rife said. \u201cBut our players were genuinely excited. They want\u00a0great players\u00a0around them.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0been a\u00a0really good\u00a0buzz around the program.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
