McDavid smashes NHL-era Olympic points record with two-assist performance vs. Finland<\/p>\n

Playing in his debut Olympics, Edmonton Oilers<\/a> captain Connor McDavid has already set another record.<\/p>\n

Earning his 12th point of the tournament with an assist on Canada\u2019s opening goal against Finland, McDavid now has the most points in a single Olympic tournament in the NHL era of the Games. Adding another assist on the game-winning goal, he brought his points total to 13, creating more distance in the records book.<\/p>\n

The initial point came late in the second period on the power play, with Canada down 2-0. Wearing the \u2018C\u2019 in Sidney Crosby\u2019s absence,<\/a> McDavid fed Cale Makar, whose point shot was tipped in by Sam Reinhart to put Canada on the board. Here\u2019s a look at that record-breaking assist:<\/p>\n

Centring Canada\u2019s top line through this tournament, McDavid now has two goals and 11 assists. The only other player with a double-digit points total is linemate Macklin Celebrini, who has a tournament-leading five goals. The 19-year-old earned his 10th point alongside McDavid on the game-winning goal scored by Nathan MacKinnon on Friday.<\/p>\n

The points record was previously held by Finnish forwards Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu, who both tallied 11 points en route to a silver-medal finish at the Turin Olympics in 2006. The outright points record still belongs to Canadian Harry Watson, who put up an impressive total of 37 at the first ever Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. The record for the women\u2019s tournament is held by Sarah Nurse, cousin of Oilers defender Darnell Nurse, who put up 18 points at the Beijing Games in 2022.<\/p>\n

At last year\u2019s 4 Nations Face-Off,<\/a> McDavid tallied three goals and five points in four games. He famously scored the golden goal in overtime for Canada, putting his nation on top at the first best-on-best hockey tournament since the World Cup of Hockey in 2016. McDavid is currently in the midst of another banner year with the Oilers, with 34 goals and 96 points in 58 games. On pace for 48 goals and 136 assists, it would be the second-best year of his career in both categories if he can keep firing at that rate.<\/p>\n

Canada is now through to the Final on Sunday, where they\u2019ll play for a gold medal against either Slovakia or the United States. Canada won gold at the last two Olympic Games that featured NHLers, in 2010 and 2014.<\/p>\n
