\n\tSpeaking in a new interview with Zane Lowe, Grohl reflected on the band\u2019s internal discussions following Freese\u2019s exit last year. Freese, who stepped in as Foo Fighters\u2019 drummer in 2023 after the death of Taylor Hawkins, revealed in May that he had been let go from the group, writing on Instagram that the band had decided \u201cto go in a different direction with their drummer\u201d and that \u201cno reason was given.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGrohl said the band spent months discussing their next steps before making the decision.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and thought, \u2018OK, let\u2019s call Josh and let him know that we are going to move on with a different drummer,\u2019\u201d Grohl said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe called, as a band, all of us called, it wasn\u2019t just me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGrohl described the conversation as direct and appreciative. \u201cBasically, we called Josh, and were like, \u2018Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing the call, Grohl noted that the band chose not to publicly address the situation at the time. \u201cAfter that, we didn\u2019t make a press release, tweet anything or do interviews. We didn\u2019t say anything,\u201d he said. \u201cSince then, there\u2019s been a lot of talk about it, but I think Josh said it best when he said that he didn\u2019t feel our music really resonated with him, and that\u2019s really important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese has since rejoined Nine Inch Nails and recently stepped in for Weezer during their Australian run for the Good Things Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\tGrohl\u2019s comments come as Foo Fighters prepare to release their 12th studio album, Your Favorite Toy, due April 24. The band dropped the title track on Friday, with Grohl describing it as a pivotal moment in shaping the new record\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 really was the key that unlocked the tone and energetic direction of the new album,\u201d Grohl said. \u201cWe stumbled upon it after experimenting with different sounds and dynamics for over a year, and the day it took shape I knew that we had to follow its lead. It was the fuse to the powder keg of songs we wound up recording for this record. It feels new.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe album announcement arrives ahead of Foo Fighters\u2019 upcoming stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand,<\/a> scheduled to run between November 2026 and January 2027.<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese joined Foo Fighters in 2023 during a transitional period for the band following Hawkins\u2019 sudden passing in 2022. His tenure marked a significant chapter in the group\u2019s evolution as they continued touring and recording in the wake of the loss.<\/p>\n
