Ibrahim M\u2019hamidi, a Secondary 4 student in Montreal, was out on the rink near his high school Thursday, using his lunch break to hang out with friends on the ice.<\/p>\n

The fun is all thanks to a program spearheaded by Jeunesse Loyola, in partnership with the borough of C\u00f4te-des-Neiges\u2013Notre-Dame-de-Gr\u00e2ce, to give students something to do during their free period.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to make the space and the equipment available to them, and give them access to some physical activity \u2014 you know, something to do on their lunch hour,\u201d said the non-profit organization\u2019s director, Christine Richardson.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also hot chocolate available for those who need to warm up before heading back to class.<\/p>\n

Richardson said the idea was to respond to an ongoing and growing issue in the neighbourhood. The school, one of the largest and most diverse in the city, has about 2,000 students and, come midday, they are let out for lunch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey head into the park or local stores. The sheer volume leads to tension between residents, students and merchants,\u201d said Richardson, so the aim was to give those kids a place to go, socialize and \u201cbreak up their day a little bit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dozens show up to skate<\/p>\n

Richardson said some of the kids are first-time skaters, or don\u2019t have much experience. Staff help them with fitting and lacing. They are offered helmets, and the rink has been busy every day for the last couple weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was expecting maybe 20 at most, right,\u201d said Shakeem David, a co-ordinator at Jeunesse Loyola. \u201cBut for it to be 60 to 70 kids who are just here at the rink, it\u2019s kind of crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

David said skates have been available four days a week, and the hope is to keep the activity going next week, but the chalet and rink is sometimes reserved for other community activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jeunesse Loyola is an organization that works with the youth of NDG and their families, offering\u00a0 social, recreational and educational programming.<\/p>\n

Richardson said the hope is to extend this lunch-hour initiative into the spring by transitioning to basketball.
