A December house fire that killed NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin’s father and left his mother with catastrophic injuries has been ruled accidental by the Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services.

The report stated the cause of the December 28 fire couldn’t be determined and, therefore, it was accidental. The fire, which began in a bedroom, destroyed the house, causing more than $776,000 in property damage, the report stated.

It took about two hours to bring the fire under control due to water issues in the rural area. Water to fight the blaze had to be transported to the site via tanker, and at times firefighters had to wait for more water to arrive to fight the monstrous fire. Flames were showing through the attic and had consumed about 45% of the house when firefighters arrived

Dennis Hamlin, 75, and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, were found outside their two-story home by firefighters when they arrived at the house eight minutes after being dispatched to the scene. The couple was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center by Gaston County Emergency Medical Services where Dennis later died from his injuries.

Mary Lou was transferred to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for treatment. She has been released from the hospital and continues her recovery with family. Hamlin says she’s doing well physically, but it will take some time for her to recover mentally. She attended the Daytona 500 and was on pit road with her son prior to the event.

Shortly after the fire Hamlin injured his right shoulder when he fell sifting through the house’s rubble. Hamlin had surgery on the shoulder at the end of the 2023 season. It has now reverted to the condition it was in prior to the surgery, and he said he must deal with it until the 2026 season’s conclusion. Having the surgery when he reinjured his shoulder would have required him to miss the season’s first three or four months.
