Written and directed by Mieko Ouchi,\u00a0Burning Mom\u00a0is a one-woman comedy\u00a0brimming with equal parts heart and\u00a0humour.\u00a0The Citadel\u2019s intimate Rice Theatre is transformed into\u00a0a campsite featuring Dorothy\u2019s\u00a0JAG RV.\u00a0Designed by Patrick Rizzotti<\/a>, this central set piece eventually slides open, revealing\u00a0projections\u00a0of the dusty Nevada desert\u00a0and the jewel-toned gleam\u00a0of the festival\u2019s palatial\u00a0temple.\u00a0Along with projection designer\u00a0Kim Clegg, lighting designers John Webber<\/a> and Ted Roberts<\/a>\u00a0evoke the\u00a0blistering desert heat and coolness of starry nights.\u00a0<\/p>\n Performing a one-person show is no easy feat,\u00a0but\u00a0Susinn\u00a0McFarlen makes it look effortless.\u00a0She plays\u00a0Dorothy with an earnest warmth and a sparkle of mischief,\u00a0relaying\u00a0Dorothy\u00a0hopes, joys, and heartbreaks\u00a0as if confiding in a new friend.\u00a0Though not everyone relates\u00a0to\u00a0being a parent or\u00a0losing a spouse, Dorothy\u2019s journey of\u00a0self-discovery\u00a0–\u00a0and all its unexpected twists and\u00a0turns-\u00a0\u00a0will\u00a0resonate with audiences of all ages.\u00a0Her\u00a0Burning Man anecdotes\u00a0range from\u00a0wacky\u00a0\u2013\u00a0accidentally crashing a naked bike race\u00a0\u2013 to tear-jerking\u00a0\u2013\u00a0comforting a stranger struggling with anxiety.\u00a0<\/p>\n Just\u00a0like its\u00a0heroine,\u00a0Burning Mom\u00a0is\u00a0unforgettable.\u00a0Until March 8, audiences can\u00a0experience this one-of-a-kind production at Edmonton\u2019s\u00a0Citadel Theatre.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Photo by Nanc Price for the Citadel Theatre\u2019s production of\u00a0Burning Mom\u00a0(2026).
