{"id":49351,"date":"2025-08-06T11:20:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T11:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/49351\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T11:20:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T11:20:10","slug":"public-advisory-update-on-wildfires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/49351\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Advisory: Update on Wildfires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Work is ongoing with federal, municipal and community partners during this unprecedented wildfire situation to ensure the health and safety of residents.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of a request to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, the province is welcoming three additional aircraft known as Air Tractor 802s from New Brunswick to assist in wildfire suppression efforts on Wednesday, August 6.<\/p>\n<p>Evacuation orders were issued today for:<\/p>\n<p>Sections of the Town of Holyrood, from the town boundary in the northeast corner, southward to 377 Conception Bay Highway (Irving Gas Bar)<br \/>\nThe unincorporated area of Perry\u2019s Cove<\/p>\n<p>Cabin owners in the Martin Lake and Great Rattling Brook areas in Central Newfoundland are advised to leave their cabins immediately due to a wildfire.<\/p>\n<p>An evacuation alert has been issued for the Town of Salmon Cove and the unincorporated area of Ochre Pit Cove.<\/p>\n<p>For evacuees from Small Point\u2013Adam\u2019s Cove\u2013Blackhead\u2013Broad Cove, Kingston, Western Bay and Perry\u2019s Cove<\/p>\n<p>Information for evacuees:<\/p>\n<p>ALL\u00a0evacuees MUST register with Canadian Red Cross, either:<\/p>\n<p>In person at the Persalvic School Complex in Victoria, or,<br \/>\nby calling 709-729-0921.<\/p>\n<p>If residents take shelter elsewhere, you are still required to register.<br \/>\nEmergency partners with the Canadian Red Cross, Salvation Army and Ground Search and Rescue are on-site, and are available to assist with food and emergency accommodations for those that require assistance.<br \/>\nWhile Salvation Army appreciates the outpouring of support from local residents, it advises prepared food from personal homes cannot be accepted. Salvation Army needs to ensure appropriate food health and safety standards, and can only accept un-opened pre-packaged food or items from commercial kitchens and\/or restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Information on wildfire:<\/p>\n<p>The Kingston wildfire remains very active as winds shifted throughout the day. Water bombers, a bird dog aircraft, helicopters, and ground crews actioned the fire, focusing efforts on the south towards Perry\u2019s Cove. The fire is currently holding in the Spout Brook area. Easterly and then southerly winds are anticipated overnight which should slow any southern growth. Tomorrow (Wednesday, August 6) ground crews are ready to start working the fire at the earliest opportunity.<br \/>\nRoads are closed at the following places:<\/p>\n<p>Seal Cove Road<br \/>\n377 Conception Bay Highway<\/p>\n<p>Cabin owners in Martin Lake and Great Rattling Brook<\/p>\n<p>Information for evacuees:<\/p>\n<p>ALL\u00a0evacuees are advised to leave the area immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Information on wildfire:<\/p>\n<p>Crews are also working a wildfire in central, near the Martin Lake and Great Rattling Brook areas. A helicopter and ground crews actioned that fire throughout the evening. An Incident Management Team will be deployed to this fire tomorrow (Wednesday, August 6) and suppression efforts will continue with a water bomber, three helicopters and ground crews. The fire is approximately 60 hectares.<br \/>\nRoad closures may be issued tomorrow (Wednesday, August 6).<\/p>\n<p>The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is at Level 2 and is actively coordinating emergency response. Emergency management partners have been engaged to respond, where necessary. Wildfires can increase air pollution levels, and fire smoke contains particles and pollutants that can harm your health. For air quality information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/airquality\/pages\/provincial_summary\/nl_e.html.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Air Quality Health Index<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclone.unbc.ca\/aqmap\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AQmap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A Special Air Quality Statement from Environment Canada remains in effect for St. John\u2019s and portions of the northern Avalon Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Quality Health Index for the region is forecasted as \u2018low risk\u2019 for Tuesday night and Wednesday (<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/airquality\/pages\/provincial_summary\/nl_e.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newfoundland and Labrador \u2013 Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) \u2013 Environment Canada<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Health Care<br \/>Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/nlhealthservices.ca\/news\/temporary-closure-of-holyrood-community-services-building-due-to-ongoing-wildfire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holyrood Community Services Building<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nlhealthservices.ca\/news\/temporary-closure-of-western-bay-medical-clinic-due-to-ongoing-wildfire\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Bay Medical Clinic<\/a>\u00a0are closed due to wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 immediately. For all non-emergency medical support, please call the 811 HealthLine.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health<br \/>An emergency event can lead to fear and anxiety. Mental health resources and supports are on hand at each reception centre.<br \/>If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, need support, or are looking for health information, call 811.<\/p>\n<p>If you are feeling anxious and alone, you can also call the Lifewise Provincial Warm Line at 1-855-753-2560 seven days a week from 10:00am to midnight NDT, to speak with a trained peer support worker who is there and ready to listen.<\/p>\n<p>You can also visit Bridge the Gapp to access age-appropriate programs and services that are available locally, confidential and free.<\/p>\n<p>Watercraft<br \/>Residents are reminded to avoid using watercraft in bodies of water when aircraft from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Agriculture are in the area. Recreational watercrafts are impacting waterbombers from picking up water, hindering suppression efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Use of Drones<br \/>The operation of drones in the vicinity of forest fires creates unsafe conditions for water bombers to protect communities.<\/p>\n<p>All drone operators and the general public are asked to respect the dedicated efforts of our province\u2019s firefighting personnel.
