Fans across the country didn\u2019t let the early morning hour keep them from coming together \u2014 and in the end commiserating together \u2014 after Canada\u2019s men\u2019s hockey team lost a heartbreaking Olympic gold medal game 2-1 in overtime.<\/p>\n
Inside Scotiabank Arena, home base of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the usual crowd of blue jerseys was replaced by a sea of red, but fan Matthew Dickens left feeling dejected after watching what he called \u201cprobably the best team to ever exist\u201d lose.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201c(It was) probably one of the two best hockey games I\u2019ve ever watched. And then to lose 2-1 in overtime, 3-on-3, it was probably honestly one of the worst moments of my life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven the other games, I knew we could come back,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t think we could lose. It was a shock.\u201d<\/p>\n
Canada earned its spot in the gold medal game with a late go-ahead goal against Finland, winning 3-2 after trailing 2-0 in the semifinal Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
David Nadeau and his two young children came to La Cage aux Sports bar in Montreal at 7:30 a.m. local time to watch.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m having trouble speaking right now. This is such a shame,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Fan Sean Loria said the loss was not due to a lack of effort.<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, they gave it all they had. You know, (the United States) just have a great goalie. (Connor) Hellebuyck is a great goalie. It\u2019s just a really unfortunate ending to the game,\u201d Loria said.<\/p>\n
Bars in multiple provinces were allowed to open early so that fans clad in Team Canada jerseys could cram themselves around TVs, but the crowd of hundreds at Shark Club in downtown Vancouver fell silent as Jack Hughes scored the overtime winner for the United States.<\/p>\n
Jacob Clancy said he and friends arrived at the bar about 4:45 a.m., and he had finished about four cups of coffee and a couple of beers by the time the game was over.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlthough we lost, it was a great experience. It would have been a lot better if we were celebrating, so it\u2019s a little sombre here now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
But Clancy said he still feels proud of the Canadian team.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thought they were getting golds in men\u2019s and women\u2019s, and unfortunately it ended not on our side, but I\u2019m happy for the team, you know? Happy for our country,\u201d<\/p>\n
Canada\u2019s women\u2019s hockey team lost 2-1 in their gold medal game against the United States earlier this week.<\/p>\n
Nick Gorse, who wore a Sidney Crosby jersey, said it was disappointing that Crosby wasn\u2019t able to play.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re going to have any Canadian jersey, he\u2019s the one to have. He is a legend. I was there in 2010 in Vancouver when he won gold. I was at the game,\u201d Gorse said.<\/p>\n
Crosby was injured in this year\u2019s quarterfinal game against Czechia and sat out both the semifinal against Finland and the gold medal game.<\/p>\n
But Gorse said he was excited after winning a Macklin Celebrini jersey at the sports bar.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like it\u2019s a bit of a passing of the torch in my mind, and probably in many others. I think Celebrini is going to lead us in the future for many years to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nineteen-year-old Celebrini had five goals and five assists in the six Olympic games he played for Canada.<\/p>\n
Vancouver\u2019s Indyanna Ormsby said she was up at 3 a.m. for this game.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a true Canadian. I don\u2019t care if the game was at 4 a.m. I was going to be here cheering loudly with my Canadian Flag.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ormsby said that although Canada lost, she still felt so proud of the way the team played.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe outshot them, we outplayed them. We had so many opportunities, and we just missed them by a little bit. In my heart, we still won gold. We will always be gold,\u201d said Ormsby.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Mark Carney was also up in hopes of watching Team Canada strike gold.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Carney, wearing the jersey he was gifted earlier this year by the women\u2019s national team with his surname on the back, was cheering on the Canadian men Sunday in Chelsea, Que., which is just northwest of the Ottawa-Gatineau area.<\/p>\n
\u201cCongratulations on a hard-fought and well-earned silver, @TeamCanada,\u201d Carney wrote in an X post after the game. \u201cYou made your country proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some fans left Scotiabank Arena with more anger at the United States than sorrow for the Canadian team that came up short.<\/p>\n
\u201c(President Donald) Trump is such a clown, I hate that guy,\u201d said Ben Kampe. \u201cCanada deserved that game.\u201d<\/p>\n
His friend Noah Shepherd, meanwhile, said Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal, had \u201cbetrayed\u201d Canada. The New Jersey Devils centre developed as an athlete playing minor hockey with the Toronto Marlboros.<\/p>\n
The official White House X account posted multiple times celebrating the United States\u2019 win, including an image of a bald eagle attacking a Canada goose with an old post by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrating Canada\u2019s win against the United States in the finals of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last year.<\/p>\n
Outside the Bell Centre in Montreal, fans lingered after the final buzzer, reflecting on missed chances.<\/p>\n
Jasmin Payette Champagne stood with his mother as the crowd filtered out.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to live with that for a few years until the next Olympics,\u201d he said with a shrug.<\/p>\n
