The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced\u00a0 today that Al Whitley, former NBA executive and general manager of the Texas Legends (NBA\u00a0 G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks), has joined the franchise as chief executive officer\u00a0 (CEO).\u00a0<\/p>\n
Whitley brings more than two decades of experience in professional basketball, having spent 22\u00a0 years within the Dallas Mavericks organization, where he helped drive basketball operations at\u00a0 the highest level. His leadership has been defined by his commitment to creating a winning culture, fostering relationships, and developing talent on and off the court.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Born in Belleville, Ontario and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Whitley discovered his\u00a0 passion for basketball alongside childhood friend and NBA legend Steve Nash. After playing\u00a0 college basketball at the University of New Brunswick, Whitley began his professional career\u00a0 with the Dallas Mavericks in 2001 in their marketing department, before quickly transitioning to\u00a0 basketball operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As a special advisor to former Mavericks Majority Owner Mark Cuban, Whitley played a pivotal\u00a0 role in the franchise\u2019s success, including its historic 2011 NBA Championship. That experience,\u00a0 he says, gave him firsthand insight into \u201cwhat it truly takes to build and sustain a championship\u00a0 team and culture.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 2017, Whitley was named general manager and vice president of basketball operations for\u00a0 the Texas Legends, where he oversaw all aspects of the organization – from basketball\u00a0 operations and scouting, to business development and community engagement – leading the\u00a0 team to its first-ever playoff win.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Throughout his NBA career, Whitley has worked with some of the game\u2019s most influential\u00a0 figures, including Mark Cuban, Donn Nelson, Rick Carlisle, Donnie Nelson and legendary\u00a0 players such as Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, and Luka Don\u010di\u0107.<\/p>\n
