With the next general election just a few months away, voters in the riding of Chicoutimi are heading to the polls on Monday to elect the next person who will represent them in the National Assembly.<\/p>\n
This byelection was triggered by the resignation of former Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec (CAQ) Minister of Municipal Affairs Andr\u00e9e Laforest, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Saguenay last November.<\/p>\n
Polling stations will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Seventeen polling stations will be open. They are indicated on the voter card sent by mail or on the \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec website.<\/p>\n
Preliminary data from \u00c9lections Qu\u00e9bec indicate that 5,343 people, or 11.67 per cent of the electorate, voted in advance in this byelection.<\/p>\n
Seven candidates are vying for the seat in Chicoutimi, including Francis Tremblay (CAQ), Marie-Karlynn Laflamme (Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois), and Catherine Morrissette (Conservative Party of Quebec).<\/p>\n
Tricia Murray (Quebec Liberal Party), Jeanne Palardy (Qu\u00e9bec solidaire), Olivier Dion (Climat Qu\u00e9bec) and Fran\u00e7ois Sabourin (Quebec People\u2019s Party) round out the list of candidates.<\/p>\n
Before falling into the hands of the CAQ in 2018, the riding of Chicoutimi had long been a PQ stronghold.<\/p>\n
This by-election will be closely watched, as it could provide insight into trends among voters ahead of the general election next October.<\/p>\n
