With the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic Games having come to a close on Sunday, attention now shifts to the summer games, which will be held in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
2028 will be the first time flag football is played in the Olympics, and the overwhelming desire for best-on-best will definitely impact the Canadian Football League.<\/p>\n
CFL on TSN analyst Glen Suitor is excited to see football in the Olympics, but also understands that there will be an impact on the 2028 CFL season.<\/p>\n
“The decision has basically been made that the season won’t be interrupted. What they, want to do and what I’ve heard is that they want to try to get an idea from Coach (Paul) LaPolice, who is the head coach of the Olympic flag football men’s team, what players in the CFL he’s going to be interested in, and then from there try to put together the schedule so that it can help a team.\u201d<\/p>\n
“Let’s say there are five players in the CFL who go and play for the gold medal in flag football. Those five teams, five different teams, it’s going to be impossible to give them the byes during the Olympic break, all five of them. But if it’s only two teams, you can work the schedule around it a little bit. Let’s say it is Nathan Rourke, and you give the BC Lions a bye; he only misses one game, and they have to go on. I just don’t think you can stop the season completely when there may only be two or three players.\u201d<\/p>\n
Suitor added, \u201cRemember, there’s a lot of really good Canadian football players playing in the NFL too, so there’s going to be a lot of flag football specialists that are on that team, and I think they should be. You want to put the best group you can put together to win a gold medal.”<\/p>\n
