{"id":495212,"date":"2026-02-24T00:59:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T00:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/495212\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T00:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T00:59:09","slug":"nhl-rumour-roundup-flyers-ristolainen-a-popular-trade-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/495212\/","title":{"rendered":"NHL Rumour Roundup: Flyers&#8217; Ristolainen a popular trade target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NHL\u2019s roster freeze is over, and with the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the rumour mill will start heating up quickly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With so many teams still holding onto playoff hopes, the line between buyers and sellers isn\u2019t totally clear just yet, which makes for an interesting trade season in the lead-up to March 6.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Flyers listening on Ristolainen\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/teams\/philadelphia-flyers\/\" class=\"sn-team-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-team=\"philadelphia-flyers\" data-league=\"nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> were sellers last season, and barring a pretty significant post-Olympic break win streak, it looks like they\u2019ll be in the same position again as the 2026 deadline nears. And, like last year, it appears defenceman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/rasmus-ristolainen\/0a56cb1f-c5eb-45ea-bd4b-393b33dd1ae3\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"0a56cb1f-c5eb-45ea-bd4b-393b33dd1ae3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rasmus Ristolainen<\/a> will be an increasingly popular trade target. As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7058397\/2026\/02\/20\/flyers-michkov-tocchet-trade-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reported last week<\/a>, the Flyers &#8220;likely would get some calls&#8221; on Ristolainen, and would listen.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to see why. The 6-foot-4 blue liner, who is coming off a bronze-medal victory with Finland in Milano, covers a lot of squares on the trade deadline bingo card: He\u2019s a big, right-shot rearguard with a reasonable cap hit ($5.1 million), and with one more full season left on his contract, he isn\u2019t a true rental. The 31-year-old missed most of the first half of the season with injury, making his 2025-26 debut in mid-December, but has been healthy since.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mcdavid_connor1280-2-640x360.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NHL on Sportsnet\"\/>NHL on Sportsnet<\/p>\n<p>Livestream Hockey Night in Canada, Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey, the Oilers, Flames, Canucks, out-of-market matchups, the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.sportsnetplus.ca\/hc\/en-gb\/articles\/19387070364434-NHL-Game-Finder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Broadcast schedule<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, which teams would be interested? Kurz highlights the Dallas Stars, who were in on discussions around defenceman Rasmus Andersson but ultimately lost out to the Vegas Golden Knights. Team need is there, and so is chemistry \u2014 Dallas\u2019 blue line features fellow Finns Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell; forwards Mikko Rantanen and Roope Hintz also starred for the Finnish team in Milano.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other teams in the running for Andersson included the Bruins. Boston could also be an interesting team to watch, should the market for Ristolainen heat up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kadri taking trade rumours in stride<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/teams\/calgary-flames\/\" class=\"sn-team-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-team=\"calgary-flames\" data-league=\"nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Calgary Flames<\/a> dealt defenceman Rasmus Andersson to the Golden Knights last month, and they likely aren&#8217;t done yet. The rebuilding club is poised to factor heavily into trade talks as the deadline draws near, which means top veteran players like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/nazem-kadri\/4313ca5c-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"4313ca5c-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nazem Kadri<\/a> are in the spotlight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trade talks aren&#8217;t new to Kadri. He&#8217;s dealt with them before, and when asked about how he&#8217;s handling hearing his name in the rumour mill he made it clear he&#8217;s keeping a level head and focusing on being where his feet are. The forward said his focus is on the Flames right now, and said he has been part of conversations with team leadership \u2014 though, he didn&#8217;t share details on how those chats went.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had internal chats. Obviously those, I&#8217;ll keep private. But we&#8217;ve had discussions and communicated,&#8221; Kadri said on Monday. &#8220;That&#8217;s what makes it great, is having that open line of conversation and just being able to understand where everybody&#8217;s at.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/teams\/st-louis-blues\/\" class=\"sn-team-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-team=\"st-louis-blues\" data-league=\"nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> rode a three-game losing skid into the Olympic break and considering their place at the bottom of the standings and how much speculation that\u2019s surrounded the roster this season, they\u2019re pretty clear sellers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The list of possible trade targets is long, and it includes players signed both for the short-term (defenceman Justin Faulk, who has one year left on his deal at $6.5 million, and captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/brayden-schenn\/4335a201-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"4335a201-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brayden Schenn<\/a>, with two more at the same) and long \u2014 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/jordan-kyrou\/2777030d-6d3c-47f0-92ea-1849f82219c0\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"2777030d-6d3c-47f0-92ea-1849f82219c0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jordan Kyrou<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/robert-thomas\/d96cb600-d2a7-4287-a757-ef35812e8389\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"d96cb600-d2a7-4287-a757-ef35812e8389\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Thomas<\/a> both poised to be in the trade-market spotlight. Both Kyrou and Thomas have four more seasons on their respective deals, with identical $8.125-million cap hits and no-move clauses to match.<\/p>\n<p>Sportsnet\u2019s Elliotte Friedman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/blues-looking-for-significant-trade-package-for-robert-thomas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported last month<\/a>\u00a0that the Blues would be searching for a significant trade package for Thomas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chatter around Kyrou is bound to get louder, too, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefourthperiod.com\/feb-2026\/kyrou-a-prime-trade-target-open-to-move\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period expressing last week<\/a>\u00a0the idea that a change of scenery would likely benefit both Kyrou and the Blues.
