{"id":496972,"date":"2026-02-24T19:58:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T19:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/496972\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T19:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T19:58:08","slug":"new-giraffe-born-at-toronto-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/496972\/","title":{"rendered":"New giraffe born at Toronto Zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A female calf was born at the Toronto Zoo, standing up within 30 minutes and measuring over six feet tall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Toronto Zoo is welcoming their newest edition \u2014 a Masai giraffe that was born on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The female calf was born at 1:26 a.m. and was already standing less than 30 minutes later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBoth Mom and baby have been doing well and were left to bond over the weekend,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontozoo.com\/mediaroom\/press2026\/20260224-giraffe#press\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release from the zoo said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The zoo\u2019s newest edition, who currently doesn\u2019t have a name, stands at 1.95 metres (6 foot 4 inches). Her arrival is especially sentimental as her father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/local\/article\/toronto-zoo-reveals-cause-of-death-for-giraffe-that-died-following-new-years-day-incident\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiko, died on<\/a> Jan. 2 from a cardiac failure linked with acute muscle exertion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The incident happened after the 13-year-old giraffe\u2019s head became trapped in a small gap between the slide\/shift door and a vertical post as the door was opening. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The zoo said that male giraffes have \u201clittle to no direct role in raising their calves,\u201d as those tasks are almost entirely the responsibility of the mother and, at times, other females in a group setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Masai giraffes\u2019 conservation status was raised to endangered in 2018, by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN). Less than 35,000 of the creatures live in the wild and they have experienced a 50 per cent decline in the past 30 years.
