A late\u2011night police patrol near downtown Calgary led to the arrest of two men after an officer witnessed a violent assault in Mission last week.<\/p>\n
Just before midnight on Feb. 17, a patrol sergeant saw three men attacking another man on the street at 1 Street SW and 19 Avenue. <\/p>\n
When the officer intervened, the suspects fled in a Toyota Camry, leaving behind a man in his 20s who was taken to hospital in stable condition and later released.<\/p>\n
Officers quickly located the fleeing vehicle and used a spike belt to bring it to a stop. Two suspects attempted to run but were caught by officers.<\/p>\n
Investigators believe the attack was targeted and connected to ongoing organized\u2011crime conflict in the city. <\/p>\n
Subsequent search warrants on multiple vehicles led to the seizure of 89 grams of suspected powder and crack cocaine, with an estimated street value of $5,000.<\/p>\n
One of the accused was wanted on 40 outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.<\/p>\n
Police have charged Bidong Bang Teny Wang, 23, of Calgary, with kidnapping, assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer.<\/p>\n
Rick Gatwech, 22, also of Calgary, faces the same four charges, as well as two counts of failing to comply with a release order. Gatwech was additionally arrested on 40 outstanding warrants.<\/p>\n
Both the accused are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cTargeted or not, this kind of brazen violence has no place on our streets,\u201d Staff Sgt. Don Campbell said in a statement.<\/p>\n
