Manitoba RCMP are warning the public of a new online scam in which fraudsters are impersonating Mounties.<\/p>\n

RCMP say the scammers send a text or email to an individual that connects to a video conference call with someone claiming to be an officer.<\/p>\n

If the person who receives the text or email clicks on the link, the fraudster then typically tries to convince their would-be victim they could be arrested unless they send gift cards or bitcoin, Mounties say.<\/p>\n

RCMP say the force never sends unsolicited texts or links to members of the public. <\/p>\n

In some cases, the fraudsters try to convince potential victims there\u2019s a warrant out for their arrest that can be cancelled \u2014 if they send gift cards or bitcoin.<\/p>\n

In the past two weeks, fraudsters have given dozens of people the Manitoba RCMP general phone line in an effort to convince them of their legitimacy, Mounties say.<\/p>\n

RCMP say the force never sends unsolicited texts or links to members of the public. Mounties advise anyone who receives such a link to delete the text or email.<\/p>\n

If someone has clicked on the link or provided personal details, RCMP advises the victim immediately contact their financial institution, then report it to their local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.<\/p>\n

Mounties say RCMP never ask anyone to transfer money or make payments, provide remote access to your computer, or for personal information via text message.<\/p>\n
