Toronto city council members are paying tribute to former councillor and MPP Giorgio Mammoliti after learning of his death Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Mammoliti was elected to six terms on Toronto City Council from 1998 to 2018, first representing North York Humber from 1998 to 2000, and then York West from 2000 to 2018.<\/p>\n

Sources tell Global News Mammoliti fell down the stairs at his home in the Wasaga Beach area before being taken to a trauma centre where he was put on life-support and later died.<\/p>\n

His son Chris Mammoliti confirmed the news to The Canadian Press on Wednesday, saying his father was surrounded by family members when he died.<\/p>\n

Mayor Olivia Chow issued a statement recognizing Mammoliti\u2019s years of public service.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiorgio Mammoliti served the public for many years, both as an MPP and as a city councillor. I extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to all those mourning his loss today,\u201d Chow said.<\/p>\n

According to the city\u2019s website, flags on official flagpoles at Toronto City Hall, Metro Hall and the Civic Centres will be flown at half-mast in Mammoliti\u2019s memory from February 25 to a date to be confirmed.<\/p>\n

Mammoliti twice ran unsuccessfully for mayor \u2014 in 2010 and 2023.<\/p>\n

He chaired the Toronto Zoo board, and was on the board of the Canadian National Exhibition Association. He also served on the board of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Mammoliti was the People\u2019s Party of Canada (PPC) candidate in the riding of Simcoe-Grey.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiorgio had a long and distinguished career in public service,\u201d said PPC Leader Maxime Bernier in a statement. \u201cWhat defined him was not party ideology, but his dedication to the people he represented.\u201d<\/p>\n

Condolences were also shared by current council members on social media.<\/p>\n

Coun. Anthony Perruzza, who was also an NDP MPP alongside Mammoliti, said he was \u201csaddened to learn of the sudden and tragic passing of Georgio Mammoliti.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perruzza added his \u201cthoughts and prayers are with Georgio and his family during this time of loss,\u201d and wrote, \u201cRest in peace, my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other politicians have also offered their condolences, including Deputy Mayor Mike Colle.<\/p>\n
