Calgary\u2019s ring road has attracted speeders \u2014 lots of them. <\/p>\n
Calgary police handed out an average of 22 tickets each day to speeders on Stoney Trail in the month of January, prompting some in the Calgary Police Commission to call for harsher penalties. <\/p>\n
\u201cAre we able to take that vehicle and lock it up for 60 days\u2026 like what\u2019s the law?\u201d asked commission vice chair Kelly Ogle at Wednesday\u2019s meeting. <\/p>\n
A total of 677 speeding tickets were issued along the 101-kilometre, free-flowing ring road last month. It\u2019s on track to far surpass the number handed out in 2025.<\/p>\n
In a city that is struggling to reduce the number of fatal collisions while dealing with the removal of speed-on-green traffic, there are calls for changes to the legislation to curb problem drivers. <\/p>\n
One of those possible solutions could allow officers to impound vehicles speeding excessively, which is currently the case in B.C., Saskatchewan, and Ontario. <\/p>\n
Currently, Alberta\u2019s legislation only enables officers to write a ticket \u2014 and a court summons for those going more than 50 kilometres above the speed limit \u2014 before allowing them back on the road. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they get back in that car and drive away\u2026 like that\u2026 I\u2019ll just leave that with the public, but that\u2019s ludicrous.\u201d Ogle said. <\/p>\n

As for if city hall could bring in a bylaw for increased punishment along those roads, council members who sit on the police commission say that\u2019s something outside of their prerogative. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think traffic enforcement might be pushing it too far so I\u2019d say no,\u201d said Coun. Dan McLean. <\/p>\n
