Cassidy Horne and her partner William Biso were set to welcome their first child Arabella in January.<\/p>\n

But things didn\u2019t go according to plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were ready to take care of her for the rest of her life and now that\u2019s just not going to happen,\u201d Biso said.<\/p>\n

Holly Horne, Cassidy\u2019s mother, says concerns were first raised in December 2025 when her daughter was 31 weeks pregnant, but only measuring at 29 weeks.<\/p>\n

In response, she says her daughter\u2019s family doctor sent an emergency referral to the IWK Health Centre\u2019s ultrasound clinic on Dec. 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t hear anything for two weeks,\u201d Holly said. \u201cWe went to the next appointment and found out that the referral got lost, due to their new system. So they sent another one on the 23rd, which also got lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holly Horne says that during a prenatal appointment on Jan. 8, the family says they learned the second referral also couldn\u2019t be found.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur doctor even called the clinic, but they said they couldn\u2019t do anything or tell us anything at that time because the system was down,\u201d the patient\u2019s mother says they were told. \u201cThe whole system was down that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holly then said on that Jan. 12, after leaving several voicemails, she was able to schedule an emergency ultrasound for Jan. 14.<\/p>\n

But by then, she said, it was too late.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer heart had stopped on the 13th due to the cord being wrapped around her neck seven times,\u201d Holly Horne said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really know who to blame at this point,\u201d Cassidy said, \u201cbecause there\u2019s not really anybody specific to blame. It\u2019s the whole system.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IWK Health Centre transitioned to a new digital system in December.<\/p>\n

It was part of the province\u2019s rollout of its new One Person One Record Clinical Information Program, which is expected to be fully implemented provincewide by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

The union representing health-care workers and support staff at the IWK said \u201cworkers are expressing a great deal of frustration\u201d over the system\u2019s rollout.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of those concerns are regarding potential errors or delays in care for patients as a result of this new records management system,\u201d the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union says in a statement. \u201cThe concern of these front-line workers should be taken seriously by government and management.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IWK Health Centre said it\u2019s unable to comment on this specific case, but that concerns of this nature are taken seriously and are thoroughly reviewed.<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old couple and Holly all said the situation has made them lose trust in the province\u2019s health-care system.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should be holding her in our arms, not in an urn. It\u2019s not fair,\u201d Holly said.<\/p>\n
