However, Trump does have a \u201cprivate meeting\u201d listed for 3pm ET. The White House has yet to reply to the Guardian\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The New York Post was first to report the news of the meeting, and the New York Times noted that the mayor and president were set to speak at 1pm ET, according to unnamed sources familiar with the plans. It\u2019s unclear what the scope of the meeting will include, but it comes just days after Trump said that he speaks with Mamdani regularly, during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/24\/trump-state-of-the-union-address\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his record-breaking <\/a>State of the Union address on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe new communist mayor of New York City, I think he\u2019s a nice guy, actually,\u201d Trump said of the democratic socialist.\u201cI speak to him a lot. Bad policy, but nice guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This would be the second in-person meeting for the two New Yorkers, following an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/21\/trump-administration-news-updates-latest\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unexpectedly cordial summit<\/a> in November, after Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/04\/zohran-mamdani-mayor-new-york-city\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won the mayoral election <\/a>in a landslide victory. He even pushed New Yorkers to vote for the former Democratic governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, who ran for mayor as an independent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since taking office, Mamandi &#8211; who once promised to be \u201cDonald\u2019s Trump\u2019s worst nightmare\u201d &#8211; has done little to antagonize the president. He has also commented sparingly on administration policies that could impact New York City, particularly Trump\u2019s routine threats to withhold federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities. On Wednesday, when asked about how frequently he communicates with the president, Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2026\/02\/transcript--mayor-mamdani-ahead-of-feb--27-deadline--mayor-mamda\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said <\/a>they \u201chave conversations that are always focused on how to keep the city moving forward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump, for his part, was surprisingly effusive while speaking to reporters after his sit-down with the mayor late last year, and complimented his sweeping election victory. Lutnick has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/feb\/10\/howard-lutnick-epstein-private-island\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tied to Epstein<\/a> and has admitted he had lunch with Epstein on his private island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Comer noted that Republicans tied to the Trump administration have already been brought in for questioning, including former labor secretary Alex Acosta and former attorney general Bill Barr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Anyone who has knowledge of Epstein and the investigation is of interest to the committee, he said.<\/p>\n<p>double quotation markI think we all agree the government failed. She then implored the committee to actually investigate without a partisan lens &#8211; including bringing in Donald Trump for questioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">From her statement:<\/p>\n<p>double quotation markA committee endeavoring to stopping human trafficking would seek to understand what specific steps are needed to fix a system that allowed Epstein to get away with his crimes in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>A committee run by elected officials with a commitment to transparency would ensure the full release of all the files.<\/p>\n<p>It would ensure that the lawful redactions of those files protected the victims and survivors, not powerful men and political allies.<\/p>\n<p>It would get to the bottom of reports that DOJ withheld FBI interviews in which a survivor accuses President Trump of heinous crimes.<\/p>\n<p>It would subpoena anyone who asked on which night there would be the \u2018wildest party\u2019 on Epstein\u2019s island.<\/p>\n<p>It would demand testimony from prosecutors in Florida and New York about why they gave Epstein a sweetheart deal and chose not to pursue others who may have been implicated.<\/p>\n<p>It would demand that Secretary Rubio and Attorney General Bondi testify about why this administration is abandoning survivors and playing into the hands of traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>It would seek out officers on the front lines of this fight and ask them what support they need.<\/p>\n<p>It would put forth legislation to provide more resources and force this administration to act.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not happening.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, you have compelled me to testify, fully aware that I have no knowledge that would assist your investigation, in order to distract attention from President Trump\u2019s actions and to cover them up despite legitimate calls for answers.<\/p>\n<p>If this Committee is serious about learning the truth about Epstein\u2019s trafficking crimes, it would not rely on press gaggles to get answers from our current president on his involvement; it would ask him directly under oath about the tens of thousands of times he shows up in the Epstein files.<\/p>\n<p>If the majority was serious, it would not waste time on fishing expeditions.
