{"id":501555,"date":"2026-02-26T20:41:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/501555\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T20:41:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:41:07","slug":"real-time-radiation-tracking-canadas-newest-contribution-to-the-moon-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/501555\/","title":{"rendered":"Real-time radiation tracking: Canada\u2019s newest contribution to the Moon race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As humanity gears up for its historic return to the Moon, the Canadian Space Agency is investing $5.5 million in homegrown technology to tackle one of deep space\u2019s most invisible and lethal threats: cosmic radiation. <\/p>\n<p>Awarded to Ontario\u2019s Bubble Technology Industries (BTI), the contract will fund the Canadian Active Neutron Spectrometer (CANS)\u00a0a next-generation, real-time radiation tracker that promises to keep Artemis astronauts safe while potentially advancing targeted cancer treatments here on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The CSA said in a news release that \u201cRadiation is one of the key challenges faced by astronauts living and working beyond the protective shield of Earth\u2019s atmosphere. Neutron radiation, which constitutes about 30% of total radiation in space vehicles, is especially harmful because it can cause serious biological damage and requires specialized protective measures. As Canada and its international partners advance plans for missions to the Moon, and eventually Mars, understanding exposure levels becomes increasingly important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData collected by\u00a0CANS\u00a0will allow researchers to understand how neutron radiation affects astronauts during space missions of six months or more, supporting the development of better measures to reduce risks. Beyond space exploration, data generated by\u00a0CANS\u00a0has potential applications on Earth, including cancer therapy, radiation protection for aircrews, nuclear threat detection and public safety, as well as nuclear and particle physics research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BTI has been working on this technology since 2019 and have been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceq.ca\/csa-going-forward-with-neutron-spectrometer-technology-for-astronaut-protection\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/spaceq.ca\/csa-going-forward-with-neutron-spectrometer-technology-for-astronaut-protection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series of contracts<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>BTI\u2019s CANS builds on previous work it did on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/sciences\/radi-n2.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Radi-N and Radi-N2<\/a> bubble detectors on the International Space Station.
