{"id":501585,"date":"2026-02-26T20:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/501585\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T20:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T20:56:08","slug":"four-irish-boxers-guarantee-medals-at-strandja-memorial-tournament-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/501585\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Irish boxers guarantee medals at Strandja Memorial Tournament \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish boxers have guaranteed at least four medals at the Strandja Memorial Tournament, Europe\u2019s oldest international boxing competition, in Sofia, Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Michaela Walsh, Gr\u00e1inne Walsh, Caitlin Fryers and Niamh Fay each won their quarter-final contests as four of their team-mates lost out just before the medal stages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Michaela Walsh ensured at least bronze in beating Brazil\u2019s Jessica Coutinho by unanimous decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The double Olympian and two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist opened the bout in a relaxed fashion on the back foot, outlanding her opponent with crisp jabs and straight rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After sweeping the first round on the scorecards, the second saw the Belfast native repeat the feat, landing multiple clean shots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Holding an unassailable lead, Walsh steered clear of danger in the final round, adding another international medal to her collection a month after securing a record 14th national title last month January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">World bronze medallist Gr\u00e1inne Walsh also took victory by unanimous decision, seeing off Brazil\u2019s Hazel Krishna Franco Santos to make the 65kg semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Walsh won the first round clearly, landing combinations and heavy hooks at short range. Photograph: Inpho <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Belfast\u2019s Caitlin Fryers earned a bronze medal on a split decision over Bulgaria\u2019s Venelina Poptoleva at 51kg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fryers came out on the front foot, looking to cut off the ring and get inside the range of the tall southpaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Four judges awarded the opener to the Immaculata BC fighter, but she was forced to fight going backwards more often in the second as Poptoleva adapted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The home fighter landed a couple of clean shots to finish the round as the referee stepped in to give Fryers a standing count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That left the Irish boxer with ground to make up in the final session.
