A place where golf never sleeps has arrived in Vernon following one man\u2019s near-death experience.<\/p>\n
Neil and Jenna Bestard, owners of Vernon\u2019s newest indoor golfing experience, have lived in Vernon for 20 years.<\/p>\n
Neil was a lifetime golfer until three children came along. He ended up putting down the clubs for 15 years, during which time he got big into quadding.<\/p>\n
But a little over a decade ago he suffered a near-fatal quadding accident up King Eddie forest service road. The 800-pound quad landed on his chest and head and it was his helmet that saved his life. His friend called search and rescue whose help allowed him to survive the ordeal.<\/p>\n
He gave up quadding and needed another hobby. That\u2019s when his old hobby of golf came calling.<\/p>\n
On one random night, a friend of Neil\u2019s invited him to a tee time the next morning. He went, and ended up falling back in love with the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said, I need to build a golf sim in my garage,\u201d he told The Morning Star. \u201cSo I started Googling it on how to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
He came across Back Nine and thought it was a great business model. He emailed the company and six months later got a response telling him Back Nine was coming to Canada.<\/p>\n
As a result, Vernon now has a space where golfers can have a quiet, private indoor experience on a sim that comes with all the ball data they could need.<\/p>\n
Back Nine is an indoor golf experience featuring three Tiger Woods-backed Full Swing golf simulators at its new location on 45th Avenue.<\/p>\n
Golfers in the area will soon be shaking off the rust as the courses open up in the coming weeks. But with places like Back Nine, there\u2019s no need for an off-season as golf can be played indoors year-round. There isn\u2019t even a need for the sun to be shining, as members can access the Back Nine facility any time of day or night.<\/p>\n
Back Nine started in the U.S., and the Vernon location is the first franchise to be established in Canada. Its owners are excited to share with locals what the experience has to offer.<\/p>\n
Neil and Jenna had a soft opening of the business a couple weeks ago. On Saturday, Feb. 28, they\u2019ll hold a grand opening.<\/p>\n
The Bestards said the first weeks in business have created a buzz around town, with already 45 Google reviews submitted and notable growth on their social media channels.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of it has been super positive,\u201d Jenna said. \u201cAnd we have hit our target of selling our first 20 founding members.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Bestards\u2019 goal is to eventually become fully membership-based, though public tee times will be available while that membership base builds up.<\/p>\n
A membership at Back Nine will run a golfer about $300 per month, or $3,600 annually. Back Nine does have a grand opening sale on now for $254 per month and two months free \u2014 and it\u2019s cheaper to split a membership with a friend. <\/p>\n
The couple says free demos will always be on offer to give people a taste of the experience.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a semi-passive business model that allows members to come and go as they please. Security cameras keep an eye on the facility while golfers hit balls at 2 a.m., if they like.<\/p>\n
