Indiana\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0tennis is looking to post\u00a0its\u00a0best season in years, and with the\u00a0Hoosiers\u2019\u00a0success\u00a0in the nonconference slate so far, it is\u00a0within\u00a0reach.\u00a0Indiana\u00a0currently boasts\u00a0an\u00a08-1\u00a0overall record.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Hoosiers are led by second-year head coach Gabrielle\u00a0Moore. Moore\u00a0played\u00a0four years\u00a0of collegiate tennis\u00a0at Southern University and A&M College\u00a0from 2012-15. She\u00a0coached\u00a0at\u00a0Lake Forest College, Jackson State University, and most recently, McNeese State University\u00a0before becoming Indiana\u2019s head coach. She\u00a0led McNeese to a program-record 20 wins during her final season at the helm in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Indiana posted an 8-15 record during Moore\u2019s first season.\u00a0It\u00a0did, however, record more\u00a0conference\u00a0wins than the prior year and a winning record at home.\u00a0Indiana finished with\u00a0just\u00a0six\u00a0wins,\u00a0no Big Ten victories and a losing record at home\u00a0the season before Moore was hired.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This season, Moore\u00a0and the Hoosiers\u00a0currently sit\u00a0at\u00a08-1, with notable wins\u00a0over\u00a0the University\u00a0of\u00a0Cincinnati and Cornell\u00a0University.\u00a0Indiana opens\u00a0Big Ten\u00a0play against\u00a0Purdue\u00a0on\u00a0March 7\u00a0in\u00a0Bloomington.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Much of what Indiana has\u00a0accomplished\u00a0so far on the court can be attributed to a strong\u00a0freshman\u00a0class\u00a0Moore brought in this season. The class is\u00a0headlined\u00a0by\u00a0five-star\u00a0recruits\u00a0Hi\u2019ilani\u00a0Williams and Ameia Sorey, two of the top recruits from their class.\u00a0Alessandra\u00a0Teodosescu,\u00a0one of the top recruits from Italy, rounds out the talented class.\u00a0Williams and\u00a0Teodosescu\u00a0have become a dominant pair, and they currently headline the team as\u00a0No. 1 doubles pairing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Williams, an Oro Valley,\u00a0Arizona,\u00a0native,\u00a0is one of the top players in the prep circuit. She was\u00a0ranked\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0No. 1\u00a0player\u00a0in\u00a0Arizona\u00a0for her class and 28th nationally. Sorey is from Miami and was\u00a0ranked\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0No. 4\u00a0player in\u00a0Florida\u00a0and 22nd nationally.\u00a0Teodosescu\u00a0was named to the Big Ten Players to Watch\u00a0list heading into this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As for the returning Hoosiers, senior Nicole\u00a0Teodosescu\u00a0and junior Elisabeth\u00a0Dunac\u00a0have provided strong play in both singles and doubles to start the season.\u00a0Both have\u00a0contributed\u00a0greatly to\u00a0the team\u2019s success so\u00a0far,\u00a0sporting winning\u00a0records\u00a0in doubles and singles and\u00a0bringing\u00a0experience to a\u00a0relatively\u00a0young\u00a0and inexperienced\u00a0roster.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Big Ten is loaded with talent throughout the conference this year. Ohio State currently paces the conference with\u00a0a\u00a08-1 overall record and 1-0 record in conference play. Maryland\u00a0is\u00a07-1,\u00a0Washington is\u00a07-0, and Wisconsin\u00a0is\u00a07-2.\u00a0Indiana will face\u00a0Maryland,\u00a0Ohio\u00a0State\u00a0and Wisconsin\u00a0later this spring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
To continue being successful, Indiana\u00a0has to\u00a0get off to a stronger start in conference play.\u00a0It\u00a0has\u00a0a\u00a0combined\u00a0six wins in conference play over the past three years,\u00a0and that has resulted in them finishing\u00a0in\u00a0the bottom half of the conference. If they\u00a0are able to\u00a0split the conference set this year, the\u00a0Hoosiers\u00a0have a great chance to finish with a winning record and position themselves well for the Big Ten Tournament.\u00a0<\/p>\n
