I asked Samsung\u2019s Won-Joon Choi, the executive in charge <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/samsung-electronics-announces-new-leadership-at-dx-division\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of both R&amp;D and operations<\/a> for Samsung\u2019s mobile business. He says the added thickness of magnets is a bad tradeoff to make, because you\u2019re just going to buy a case anyhow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cAbout 80 or 90 percent of people are using a case, and cases with magnets are very popular these days,\u201d he tells me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Samsung would rather use that extra height to give the phone a larger battery or make it thinner, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">That doesn\u2019t mean Samsung isn\u2019t looking into magnets. \u201cWe\u2019re still doing a lot of research to make sure we don\u2019t have any sacrifice inside the phone; when we actually achieve that, we\u2019ll integrate,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Personally, I disagree with Choi\u2019s premise. I want extra battery and magnets, and I\u2019m willing to sacrifice thinness to get it. Phones are thin enough already, except for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/854352\/samsung-galaxy-z-trifold-hands-on\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ones that fold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">And if Samsung took charge of the magnets like Apple, and replicated Apple\u2019s standard pattern and strength, maybe the magnet case I use with my Galaxy S25 would properly and firmly hold onto magnetic battery packs without them rotating in place. Since there\u2019s no magnets inside my phone, I\u2019m at the mercy of casemakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But I get it. Why make the tradeoff if someone will pay for a case anyhow? Seems like we need to ask Apple and Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/analysis\/762711\/pixel-10-qi2-magnets-pixelsense\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">why they chose differently<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Why?
