{"id":50321,"date":"2025-08-06T20:28:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T20:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/50321\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T20:28:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T20:28:12","slug":"million-year-old-tools-found-on-island-puzzle-archaeologists-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/50321\/","title":{"rendered":"Million-year-old tools found on island puzzle archaeologists | Features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"pexels-ian-panelo-6564821\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>(Photo by Nothing Ahead via Pexels)<\/p>\n<p>                                    By Talker<\/p>\n<p>By Stephen Beech<\/p>\n<p>The earliest evidence of man&#8217;s ancestors on <a href=\"https:\/\/talker.news\/2025\/04\/24\/professor-publishes-worlds-first-gaelic-translation-of-the-hobbit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hobbit<\/a> Island&#8217;s neighbor &#8211; dating back over one million years &#8211; has been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>But exactly who the now extinct people living on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi remains a mystery, say archaeologists.<\/p>\n<p>Recent findings show that early hominins made a major deep-sea crossing to reach Sulawesi much earlier than previously established, based on the discovery of stone tools dating to at least 1.04 million years ago at the Early Pleistocene &#8211; or \u2018Ice Age\u2019 &#8211; site of Calio.<\/p>\n<p>A field team, led by Budianto Hakim from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brin.go.id\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia<\/a> (BRIN), excavated a total of seven stone artefacts from the sedimentary layers of a sandstone outcrop in a modern corn field at the southern Sulawesi location.<\/p>\n<p>The research team says, in the Early Pleistocene period, it would&#8217;ve been the site of hominin tool-making and other activities &#8211; including hunting &#8211; in the vicinity of a river channel.<\/p>\n<p>The Calio artefacts consist of small, sharp-edged fragments of stone that the early human tool-makers struck from larger pebbles that had most likely been obtained from nearby riverbeds.<\/p>\n<p>The team used palaeomagnetic dating of the sandstone itself and direct dating of an excavated pig fossil to confirm an age of at least 1.04 million years for the artefacts.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Professor Adam Brumm, the team had previously revealed evidence for hominin occupation in the archipelago &#8211; known as Wallacea &#8211; from at least 1.02 million years ago, based on the presence of stone tools at Wolo Sege on the island of Flores, and by around 194,000 years ago at Talepu on Sulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAADCAQAAAAe\/WZNAAAAEElEQVR42mM8U88ABowYDABAxQPltt5zqAAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==\" alt=\"Evidence of man&#x2019;s ancestors on Hobbit Island&#x2019;s neighbour date back 1.04M years\" class=\"img-responsive lazyload full default\" width=\"1279\" height=\"1619\" data- data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Stone tools were excavated from Calio, Sulawesi, and dated to over 1.04 million years ago.
