She took a similar approach to her 2,700km <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-forgot-why-i-was-riding-a-bike-i-forgot-where-i-was-inside-sarah-rugginss-extraordinary-2-700km-world-record\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-forgot-why-i-was-riding-a-bike-i-forgot-where-i-was-inside-sarah-rugginss-extraordinary-2-700km-world-record\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-forgot-why-i-was-riding-a-bike-i-forgot-where-i-was-inside-sarah-rugginss-extraordinary-2-700km-world-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John o\u2019 Groats to Land\u2019s End to John o\u2019 Groats (JOGLEJOG) record<\/a> last May, which the then 37-year-old completed in five and a half days, with just eight hours\u2019 sleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a ride like this, the hard part is staying sharp when tired,\u201d said Ruggins of her latest challenge, which she is calling \u2018One Way North\u2019 (OWN).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe record will come down to thousands of small decisions, repeated hour after hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about focusing on the controllables that allow you to keep moving forward when the environment is not in your favour and your mind is telling you to quit. The charity has been distributing bicycles to communities in Africa, Asia and South America for more than 20 years, and this week <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/a-fierce-force-for-change-charity-celebrates-one-million-bikes-helping-communities-around-the-world\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/a-fierce-force-for-change-charity-celebrates-one-million-bikes-helping-communities-around-the-world\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/a-fierce-force-for-change-charity-celebrates-one-million-bikes-helping-communities-around-the-world\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced it had reached a milestone of one million bicycles<\/a>. Ruggins hopes to raise \u00a360,000, enough for 500 more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is more than a record attempt,\u201d Ruggins said. \u201cI want to show what\u2019s possible when life doesn\u2019t go to plan. We can use what\u2019s given to us to raise awareness around the power of a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former track runner, Ruggins was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome, a rare autoimmune condition, when she was 15, leaving her bed-bound and dependent on a wheelchair to get around. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the most painful conditions known to modern medicine,\u201d she told Cycling Weekly last year.<\/p>\n<p>It took 10 years before the Canadian could return to sport.
