Two hospitals in Greater Victoria are considered among the top 25 in Canada, according to a new ranking by media outlet Newsweek.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Newsweek released its eighth annual list of the top hospitals in the world, and while Vancouver Island was not among the top 250 out of more than 2,500 worldwide \u2013 it was recognized on a national scale.<\/p>\n
Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) in Victoria was named the 20th best hospital in Canada, while Victoria General Hospital (VGH) in View Royal was ranked 25th out of more than 70 that were reviewed across the country.<\/p>\n
Newsweek created its ranking based on four data scores: hospital quality metrics, recommendations from medical experts \u2013 including doctors, hospital managers, and other healthcare professionals \u2013 existing patient experience data, and a Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey.<\/p>\n
Each hospital was given a score out of 100 per cent, which is comparable only within that country, as each country may have different ways of ranking hospital quality metrics, notes Newsweek.<\/p>\n
In Canada, University Health Network \u2013 Toronto General Hospital was named the number one hospital in the country with a score of 90.02 per cent. It was also ranked the second best hospital in the world, just under the U.S.\u2019s Mayo Clinic \u2013 Rochester in Minnesota.<\/p>\n
In Victoria, Royal Jubilee Hospital \u2013 in the 20th spot in Canada \u2013 had an overall score of 72.88 per cent, while Victoria General Hospital had a score of 72.75 per cent in its 25th position.<\/p>\n
RJH and VGH were the only two Vancouver Island hospitals to make it onto the top hospitals in Canada list.<\/p>\n
The bottom ranked hospital to make it onto the national list was Guelph General Hospital in Guelph, Ont., with a score of 70.03 per cent in 73rd place.<\/p>\n
