IBF super featherweight champion Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez faces long-reigning WBO ruler and compatriot Emanuel Navarrete in an all-Mexican world title showdown on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.<\/p>\n
Given the promotional tagline of ‘The Next King of Mexixo’, the bout will indeed crown a new fighting hero for a boxing-mad nation.<\/p>\n
Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) is probably already assured of that status as a three-weight world champion who has reigned at 130 pounds since February 2023, when he recovered from a heavy fourth-round knockdown to stop Australia’s Liam Wilson in the ninth.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old’s progress hasn’t been without bumps in the road since then. Navarrete boxed to a 12-round draw against Robson Conceicao in November 2023 despite dropping Brazil’s 2016 Olympic gold medalist twice. That was followed by an unsuccessful move up to lightweight and a loss to\u00a0Denys Berinchyk with the vacant WBO belt on the line.<\/p>\n
After battering Oscar Valdez in a one-sided December 2024 rematch, Navarrete held onto his title last May in controversial fashion against Charley Suarez. Their fight was initially stopped and awarded to Navarrete on a technical decision, the referee ruling that a cut over his left eye had been caused by a headbutt. However, replays clearly showed a Suarez punch had caused the injury and the verdict was changed to a no-contest.<\/p>\n
Nunez (29-1, 27 KOs) has not experienced any such turbulence and is on a 19-fight winning streak. It is notable that his two world title fights against\u00a0Masanori Rikiishi and\u00a0Christopher Diaz-Velez are the only times the 28-year-old has been forced to go to the scorecards, meaning there are still questions to be answered regarding his much-vaunted power at world level.<\/p>\n
