\n OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced late Friday that the company had signed a deal with the Pentagon<\/a> for its AI tools to be used in the military\u2019s classified systems, but with seemingly similar guardrails rival Anthropic had also requested.\n <\/p>\n

\n The deal with OpenAI comes the same day President Donald Trump announced all federal government agencies must cease using Anthropic\u2019s AI tools<\/a>, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared that the company would be deemed a \u201csupply chain risk,\u201d all over refusing to back down in its negotiations with the Pentagon over requested restrictions of its AI system being used in autonomous weapons and mass surveillance of US citizens.\n <\/p>\n

\n But Altman\u2019s statement<\/a> suggests the Pentagon agreed to similar restrictions with OpenAI\u2019s models.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cTwo of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement,\u201d Altman said on X. \u201cWe also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the (Department of War) also wanted.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Altman said they would send forward deployed engineers to the Pentagon to ensure the safety of their models.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements,\u201d Altman noted.\n <\/p>\n

\n Anthropic said on Friday it plans to legally challenge the \u201csupply chain risk\u201d designation, one that is normally reserved for companies with direct connections to foreign adversaries. It would require all contractors who work with the military to prove their military work does not touch Anthropic\u2019s products.\n <\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s not clear what is different about OpenAI\u2019s deal with the Pentagon versus what Anthropic wanted.\n <\/p>\n

\n CNN has asked both the Pentagon and OpenAI for clarifications.\n <\/p>\n
