{"id":504741,"date":"2026-02-28T06:58:19","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T06:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/504741\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T06:58:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T06:58:19","slug":"meteorologists-warn-alberta-travel-could-be-tricky-up-to-30-cm-of-snow-forecast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/504741\/","title":{"rendered":"Meteorologists warn Alberta travel could be tricky, up to 30 cm of snow forecast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cBe prepared for quickly changing and deteriorating road conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada with a large swath of southern Alberta under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/environment\/weather\/severeweather\/weather-alerts\/colour-coded-alerts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cyellow\u201d<\/a> snowfall warning, which means hazardous weather could cause localized, short-term damage or disruptions across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tA large swath of southern Alberta, stretching from Jasper to Medicine Hat is under a snowfall warning, with up to 30 cm expected before it tapers off overnight Friday.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSource: Environment Canada\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor said snow started falling in Calgary around 8 p.m. on Thursday and by around noon on Friday, about 6 cm had fallen at the Calgary International Airport, with more outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunities off to the northwest, probably about 12 cm \u2014 and some of the heaviest amounts have been out in the Ghost Lake area towards Canmore, just north of there. Water Valley stretching out to the Ghost Lake area, upwards of 20 cm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe six centimetres or more of snow that fell in Calgary overnight made for a nasty morning commute.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSource: 511Alberta\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The snow is expected to continue off and on overnight. Typically with those freeze-thaw conditions, we can see the formation of ice \u2014 especially at this time of the year, when (daytime) temperatures are going to be above and below zero overnight,\u201d said Chris McGeachie, spokesperson for the City of Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>The return of the winter weather is also causing some issues at Calgary International Airport, with management warning travellers to check their flight status before heading to the airport, and to leave plenty of time to catch their flight.<\/p>\n<p>Around noon Friday, the arrivals and departures board was already littered with several delays and cancellations.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone planning on driving west into British Columbia should also be prepared for some heavy snow.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, 38 cm of snow fell in the Rogers Pass area, along the Trans Canada Highway, and up to 15 cm more are expected before it tapers off Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tHeavy snow is seen falling around the Jack MacDonald showshed, just west of Glacier National Park, with up to 50 cm of snow in the forecast before it tapers off Friday night.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tDriveBC\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Along with the snow, temperatures across much of southern Alberta are expected to continue the up and down roller coaster that we\u2019ve seen in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re gonna see the overnight lows tonight about minus 15 in Calgary, probably minus 20 in some of the surrounding areas and even the daytime highs on Saturday about minus seven in the city,\u201d said Proctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general terms, we\u2019re gonna warm up as we move through the weekend.
