{"id":505081,"date":"2026-02-28T10:52:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T10:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/505081\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T10:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T10:52:10","slug":"premier-scott-moe-lands-in-india-says-lentil-tariffs-might-actually-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/505081\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier Scott Moe lands in India, says lentil tariffs \u2018might actually increase\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/india\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">India\u2019s<\/a> tariffs on Canadian lentils may increase upon landing in India for a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade<\/a> mission with other Canadian delegates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters upon landing in Mumbai on Friday, Moe says he would \u201clove to see\u201d tariffs removed on pea, lentil and bean products \u2014 also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/pulses\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulses<\/a> \u2014 before the end of the trip next week. However, he added that it wasn\u2019t likely that all products would see tariff removals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard some discussion that in the case of lentils that there\u2019s some discussion that they might actually increase to some degree,\u201d Moe said.<\/p>\n<p>India currently has a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian lentils.<\/p>\n<p>The country also placed a 30 per cent tariff on Canadian yellow peas in November to protect its local producers.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>India is a major importer of Canadian pulses, accounting for over 50 per cent of all pulse imports from 2000 to 2020, according to Pulse Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>Moe will be in India until next week and says he will be focusing on advancing trade with India on Saskatchewan staples like potash and uranium, alongside agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a tremendous opportunity to actually advance that trade and not only into other products but into larger volumes of the products that we do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Trade with India has been under fire as of late, with threats of foreign interference from the country an ongoing concern.<\/p>\n<p>The day before Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s official visit to Mumbai and New Delhi, a senior official said the government believed India was no longer plotting attacks on Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>The official\u2019s comments at a press background briefing were the first to suggest India had halted the clandestine operations that Canada has linked to a murder and other violence.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11710212\/donald-trump-cuba-takeover\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1772275930_673_donald-trump-cuba.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tTrump says \u2018maybe we\u2019ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11709998\/cbsa-quebec-company-charged-hiring-unauthorized-foreign-workers\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/9bec4bbf75143d447782d1e1c29250383f4a468bb8a2b93e1334369a8434d730.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tQuebec company charged with hiring 21 unauthorized foreign workers\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree on Thursday would not fully agree with that statement when asked multiple times.
