<\/p>\nFOAM LAKE \u2014 Craig Reynolds returned to school for a post-graduate form of show and tell.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He carried the Grey Cup into assemblies at Foam Lake Elementary School (kindergarten to Grade 6) and Foam Lake Composite School (Grades 7-12) on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Saskatchewan Roughriders\u2019 President-CEO was accompanied by Tommy Stevens, who ran for two of the community-owned CFL team\u2019s three touchdowns in a 25-17 championship-game victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Nov. 16.<\/p>\n
Soon after Saskatchewan captured the Cup for the fifth time in franchise history, Reynolds began envisioning a grand excursion to his hometown.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe reached out to us,\u201d marvelled Nevin Halyk, the high school\u2019s Principal, during an afternoon visit. \u201cHe said, \u2018We\u2019ll be there the whole day, so there\u2019s no rush. What do you want to do?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was all about us and not about him. That says a lot about him and a lot about the Riders, too. They\u2019re so grateful for the support they get.\u201d<\/p>\n
The gratitude went both ways.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is really good for the school and the community,\u201d said Carson Osborne, a Grade 9 student. \u201cIt has been really cool to see it all. We\u2019re very fortunate as a town and a province that they won it all.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis means a lot. We\u2019ve been waiting for this for a long time. It had been 12 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Osborne doesn\u2019t remember the earlier Grey Cup victory, but he celebrated it all the same.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had a picture taken with the Cup in 2013,\u201d he said with a smile. \u201cMy dad took it.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Osborne posed for a photo on Friday, he was flanked by two fellow signal-callers \u2014\u00a0Stevens and Reynolds. The latter is a former quarterback of the Foam Lake Panthers high school team.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy claim to fame is that we lost every game when I was the quarterback,\u201d Reynolds told the students. \u201cThat tells you how good I was.\u201d<\/p>\n
So does a plaque, prominently displayed in the high school\u2019s lobby, celebrating Reynolds\u2019 2022 induction into the Horizon School Division Wall of Fame.<\/p>\n
In a second-floor classroom \u2014 where many an incalculable number of math classes were taught by Graham Farrell \u2014\u00a0a drawing of Reynolds commemorates his decoration as Foam Lake Composite\u2019s top math student of 1993. He thus appears in the school\u2019s Math Wall of Fame.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a celebrity,\u201d Halyk said, \u201cbut he\u2019s kind of just our guy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Halyk has known Reynolds for as long as the Roughriders\u2019 President-CEO can remember. Once upon a time, Halyk babysat Reynolds and his sister, Lisa.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019d usually watch a little TV and then they\u2019d go to bed,\u201d said Halyk, whose parents resided just two blocks away from Dale and Anne Reynolds and their two children in the town of 1,100.<\/p>\n
Anne enjoyed a lengthy tenure as the secretary at Foam Lake Elementary School, where her son began to achieve stratospheric academic standards.<\/p>\n
\u201cCraig was in my first-ever calculus class,\u201d noted Farrell, who joined the high school\u2019s faculty in 1990 and, despite being \u201csemi-retired,\u201d still teaches morning classes.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was so smart, it was ridiculous. Everything he ever did, he rose to the top.\u201d<\/p>\n
Everything?<\/p>\n
\u201cI actually scored on that basketball net, right down there,\u201d Reynolds said in the gymnasium, pointing to his left. \u201cRight after halftime, we inbounded the ball, I got a breakaway, and scored on our own net.\u201d<\/p>\n
There were plenty of eyewitnesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I was the referee,\u201d Farrell mused.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery small town is like that. Everyone plays so many roles.\u201d<\/p>\n
Farrell, for example, is the mayor.<\/p>\n
His wife, Cheryl, is Foam Lake Elementary School\u2019s principal. And \u2014 expanding the web even further \u2014\u00a0Cheryl was Reynolds\u2019 English teacher in Grade 12.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a typical Saskatchewan small town,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody knows everybody.<\/p>\n
\u201cI couldn\u2019t sleep last night, because I was so excited. It\u2019s something you dream about \u2014 taking the Grey Cup back to your hometown.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was the second such visit for Reynolds, who was the Roughriders\u2019 Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer when they won the Grey Cup in 2013.<\/p>\n
Not long after that, Reynolds embarked for Foam Lake with receivers Weston Dressler and Taj Smith.<\/p>\n
Dressler accompanied Reynolds on a subsequent trip to Foam Lake Composite School, where \u2014\u00a0unbeknownst to the proud alumnus \u2014\u00a0his image was part of the Math Wall of Fame.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one had told me that they did such a thing,\u201d Reynolds remembered. \u201cIt was years after I went to school there.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Club had provided some funding to support the amateur football program in Foam Lake, so Weston and I came back to present that cheque. They were giving Weston a school tour.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had never seen the (Math Wall of Fame) before. I walked in there and it was kind of jarring. You look up and your huge face is on the wall.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s interesting, too, because I know the people who are up there with me who are around my age or of my vintage. It\u2019s such a small town and such a small school, so there\u2019s familiar faces beside me.\u201d<\/p>\n
And in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the elementary school this morning, I got asked a question by a kid,\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cHe looked so much like a friend of mine. I knew instantly it was a friend of mine\u2019s son.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked him who his parents were and, of course, it was Brennan Hack\u2019s young son. I thought, \u2018That\u2019s Brennan\u2019s kid,\u2019 because he looks exactly like him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe familiarity really hit me all day.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was the same thing when Reynolds and Stevens visited Foam Lake Community Hall, which was built entirely by volunteers.<\/p>\n
Everyone who entered the expensive facility was already on a first-name basis with Reynolds. They were quickly on a first-name basis with the amiable Stevens, who introduced himself to everyone upon their arrival.<\/p>\n
\u201cExperiencing this with Craig and his son, Noel, makes this very special,\u201d the Roughriders\u2019 short-yardage specialist said.<\/p>\n
Reynolds and Stevens posed for photos and signed autographs at all three venues they visited on Friday. Appreciation was evident at every stop.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you for building on the history of our school,\u201d Principal Halyk said as the Roughriders\u2019 delegation prepared to transport the Grey Cup, secure in its case, to the Community Hall.<\/p>\n
