Hogan\u2019s Alley, also referred to as \u201cthe Harlem of the North,\u201d was once a vibrant neighbourhood for Black families and businesses.<\/p>\n
But the building of the Georgia Viaduct and changing zoning laws eventually pushed them out.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we lost with the displacement was not only the physical structures, the homes, the businesses, but also the social, political capital that the community had established,\u201d said Djaka Blais, executive director of Hogan\u2019s Alley Society.<\/p>\n
Participants at Eth\u1ecd\u0301s Lab\u2019s annual hackathon \u2014 called Blackathon \u2014 on Friday were asked to help redevelop the neighbourhood and design a cultural hub.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe make Black history hands-on,\u201d said Anthonia Ogundele, the founder of the Eth\u1ecd\u0301s Lab Education Society.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey may not have heard about it or learned about it. Here, they can be a part of reimagining what this place could be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Using AI tools, teams had to come up with prompts and images \u2014 and eventually a cinematic trailer \u2014 that would attract their friends to the new venue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re envisioning a space for people to hang out and just create community, like put more feeling into things that are being built and not just making money,\u201d said event participant Munirat Dejown.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like it\u2019s an amazing model to plan things,\u201d said Chibueze Benneth, another participant. \u201cI\u2019m a big believer in having your ideas planned before you perform them. I\u2019m happy to be exposed to this. This is my first time using Google Veo.\u201d<\/p>\n
