{"id":506428,"date":"2026-03-01T01:55:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T01:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/506428\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T01:55:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T01:55:34","slug":"inuit-mobility-family-ties-drive-canada-greenland-relationship-ambassador-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/506428\/","title":{"rendered":"Inuit mobility, family ties drive Canada\u2013Greenland relationship, ambassador says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada\u2019s new consulate in Greenland is as much about helping Inuit travel throughout their traditional homeland and nurturing relationships as it is about diplomacy and security, says Carolyn Bennett, Canada\u2019s ambassador to Denmark<\/p>\n<p>The consulate, which is temporarily located on the second floor of a building shared with Iceland\u2019s consulate general in Nuuk \u2014 Greenland\u2019s capital \u2014 was formally opened Feb. 6 by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Gov. Gen. Mary Simon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255033\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-255033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Consulate-Nuuk-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-255033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canada\u2019s new consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, is located in a building shared with Iceland\u2019s consulate general. (Photo courtesy of Global Affairs Canada)<\/p>\n<p>Bennett attended the opening ceremony with Virginia Mearns, Canada\u2019s new Arctic ambassador. The opening marks Canada\u2019s first permanent diplomatic presence in Greenland.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"61\" data-end=\"202\">\u201cIt was a <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/nunavik-inuit-travel-to-greenland-in-solidarity-against-u-s-threats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">real celebration<\/a> of family,\u201d Bennett said in a video call from Copenhagen, the Danish capital.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"61\" data-end=\"202\">The consulate provides services to Canadians visiting or living in Greenland, according to the Global Affairs Canada website. That includes passport applications and replacements, citizenship documentation and notary certifications.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s presence in the region has long been welcomed, Bennett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260220-urrc-qec\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/A-14700.92eifq.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Greenland came up with a foreign, security and defence strategy that encouraged the establishment of a Canadian consulate in Nuuk, as well as Greenlandic representation in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2024, the move was incorporated into Canada\u2019s Arctic foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this is coming to fruition in a way that I think Inuit are unbelievably happy about,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing is to get [the consulate] up and running,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen it becomes about building relationships with the Greenlandic government, identifying areas of collaboration \u2014 whether that\u2019s Inuit mobility, transportation, tourism, or opportunities in health and education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett also said Canada is working closely with the Greenlandic government, the Joint Arctic Command, and Canada\u2019s Defence Department and military.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260130-indian-hospitals-feb-27\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/260123.100.95.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canada already has a presence at Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost U.S. defence installation. Two Canadians are stationed at the base\u2019s satellite-monitoring facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bennett said discussions are underway about potentially assigning a Canadian Armed Forces liaison officer either in Copenhagen or in Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also real interest in doing joint exercises together and learning from one another,\u201d Bennett said, pointing to Greenlandic interest in the Canadian Rangers program.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump has recently <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/trumps-greenland-threats-show-canadas-need-for-arctic-port-proponent-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threatened<\/a> to acquire Greenland, saying the U.S. needs it for national security reasons, but backed down from that talk in late January.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett said Greenland has indicated it would welcome an additional U.S. security presence, but any expansion would be guided by Greenlandic priorities.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/2026_annual_neas\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026_annual_NBCC_v3.gif\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She added that Greenland has been clear about maintaining control over domestic priorities such as tourism and fisheries, while remaining open to outside investment in areas like critical mineral extraction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, she said the consulate\u2019s success will be measured at the community level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job internationally is to reinforce what Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said: Greenland speaks for Greenland,\u201d Bennett said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s new consulate in Greenland is as much about helping Inuit travel throughout their traditional homeland and nurturing&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":506429,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[49,48,295,66],"class_list":{"0":"post-506428","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-environment","11":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/506428","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=506428"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/506428\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/506429"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=506428"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=506428"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=506428"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
