{"id":506991,"date":"2026-03-01T08:24:33","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T08:24:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/506991\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T08:24:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T08:24:33","slug":"ottawas-iranian-diaspora-shares-hopes-fears-in-the-wake-of-military-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/506991\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa&#8217;s Iranian diaspora shares hopes, fears in the wake of military strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Shirin Mortazavi\u2019s family opened Lavender Pastry in Westboro just over a year ago \u2014 one year after they left Iran due to repression and economic hardships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So when she saw the reports of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in Iran early Saturday, she was cautiously optimistic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFinally something is happening,\u201d said Mortazavi. \u201cThey&#8217;re going to get freed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some members of Ottawa\u2019s Iranian community agree, welcoming the attacks as a possible turning point. Others fear they could deepen civilian suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mortazavi said she hopes the airstrikes will result in an end to decades of authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur people tried all the possible peaceful ways to show their protest,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen you go into the street and they start killing you because you are looking for your rights \u2026 you need someone outside the country to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Iran has been in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/iran-protests-friday-pahlavi-9.7039231\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a state of unrest;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a state of unrest<\/a> for about two months, with thousands taking to the streets across the country in protest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/iran-protest-us-israel-pressure-9.7040592\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:government and failing economy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">government and failing economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Reaction from the Iranian government has in some cases been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/iran-protests-death-toll-trump-claims-9.7057574\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:violent and strategic;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">violent and strategic<\/a>, including a more than two-week long internet blackout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe main goal that the Iranians have is to just destroy this government from the roots,\u201d said Mortazavi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not only just the help,\u201d she said, referring to the airstrikes, \u201cbut it&#8217;s the end of this part of the history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Shahram Golestaneh, director of the Iran Democratic Association in Canada, stands outside parliament on February 28, 2026.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/b3cc8ecc5fd76d3d0957e3cdd8c7659e.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Shahram Golestaneh, director of the Iran Democratic Association in Canada, organized a small rally near Parliament Hill on Saturday. He says the airstrikes were not &#8216;unexpected.&#8217; (Cameron Mahler\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2018Change can only come from within\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Other members of Ottawa\u2019s Iranian community say the strikes are overdue, making the point that any long-term political changes must come from Iranians themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis was not unexpected,\u201d said Shahram Golestaneh, director of the Iran Democratic Association in Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Golestaneh, who gathered a group of Iranian Canadians near Parliament Hill Saturday morning, said recent protests in Iran have shown the people\u2019s desire for change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But he said he\u2019s also concerned about the intentions behind the military action, and worried about civilian casualties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI at least hadn&#8217;t heard that directly from the U.S. or from anyone else, that the human rights of the Iranian people was in the forefront,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat&#8217;s a sad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Golestaneh said he&#8217;s been unable to reach family members in Iran since the strikes, and worries internet shutdowns may be preventing contact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Military force from another country can\u2019t determine Iran&#8217;s future, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe change can come only from within.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Mehdi Fallahi hosts &quot;Namaashoum&quot; a Farsi-language radio show on Carleton University's CKCU radio station.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/eadcb7085c36056fc8892ebf62468bc7.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mehdi Fallahi, host of Ottawa Persian Radio on Carleton University&#8217;s CKCU radio station, says he&#8217;s not in favour of war and was &#8216;devastated&#8217; to hear news of the strikes. (Matthew Kupfer\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8216;I don&#8217;t see war as a solution&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Not all Iranian Canadians in Ottawa support the military action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mehdi Fallahi, host of Ottawa Persian Radio on CKCU, said he woke up \u201cvery devastated\u201d by the news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m not in favour of war and I don\u2019t see war as a solution for peace,\u201d he said. &#8220;I know that innocent people will die and precious infrastructure will be damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fallahi said he&#8217;d been in touch with family members in Iran, but his messages later went unread. He too suspects communication networks have been cut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWho knows how long this may take?
