{"id":507735,"date":"2026-03-01T17:03:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T17:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/507735\/"},"modified":"2026-03-01T17:03:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T17:03:18","slug":"federal-minister-gives-details-on-northern-share-of-new-community-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/507735\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal minister gives details on northern share of new community fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government is aiming to earmark about $10 billion out of a new multibillion-dollar infrastructure fund toward northern, Indigenous and rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson shared his goal for the Build Communities Strong Fund in an interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s lots of energy in this new government to invest in Nunavut,\u201d Robertson said, adding he has noted a \u201chuge gap\u201d in funding between Nunavut and the rest of Canada that has gone on for \u201cgenerations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Build Communities Strong Fund was announced in November. It will provide $51 billion over the next 10 years, starting in 2026, and $3 billion per year after that, toward water and wastewater infrastructure and other projects such as roads, bridges, hospitals, recreational centres and climate change adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>These projects will lay the foundation for another goal of the federal government \u2014 homebuilding.<\/p>\n<p>Homes cannot be built without proper infrastructure in place for water, wastewater and other community needs, Robertson said.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, Ottawa and the Nunavut government <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/ottawa-lines-up-partners-to-build-750-nunavut-homes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently announced $480 million<\/a> to build 750 homes in Nunavut. This will count toward the territorial government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/plan-to-build-3000-new-housing-units-by-2030-unveiled-for-nunavut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">goal to build 3,000 homes<\/a> in Nunavut by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260220-urrc-qec\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/A-14700.92eifq.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The federal government is ponying up $250 million and the remaining $230 million is covered by the Government of Nunavut.<\/p>\n<p>Ottawa announced a deal for the construction of 25 of the homes in late January.
