Wikipedia Edit-a-thon and other Surrey Art Gallery gatherings in March<\/p>\n

Surrey Art Gallery gets busy in March several events including one that aims to increase the representation of women and non-binary artists on Wikipedia (on Saturday, March 7), plus another Family Art Party (Sunday, March 8).<\/p>\n
Saturday, admission is free at an afternoon gathering where people can learn how to create and edit entries on the world\u2019s largest online encyclopedia.<\/p>\n
From noon to 4 p.m., the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will include an artist talk with Joni Cheung, aka Snack Witch, connected to the SAG feature exhibit remember the earth, remember the sky (closes March 22 at 13750 88 Ave., Surrey).<\/p>\n
Pre-researched artists and artworks in the gallery\u2019s permanent collection will be available at the annual Edit-a-thon, or come with artists in mind. No prior knowledge is required, event planners say, but to create new entries, participants must be registered Wikipedia users and have made 10 previous edits on existing pages. Visit surrey.ca<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n Sunday\u2019s free Family Art Party, noon to 4 p.m., sees Nicole Avanrenren lead a paper-cutting critter craft workshop, Francisco Berlanga teaches pinata making and Mariana Frochtengarten shares the wonders of weaving.<\/p>\n On March 5, Surrey Art Gallery Association\u2019s Thursday Artist Talk will feature painter and muralist Jennifer Clark in a chat about creative block. Free to attend, the 7 p.m. session offers practical tools, strategies and resources to help artists identify and work through creative barriers.<\/p>\n Across the Fire is the title of Mustaali Raj\u2019s immersive three-channel video installation, on view at SAG from March 7 to May 3. \u201cRaj reimagines the dragon as a shared myth that transcends geography and visual culture,\u201d says a post on the gallery\u2019s <\/a>website<\/a>. Across synchronized screens, the artist \u201ctransforms the dragon\u2019s traditional characteristics into his own distinct contemporary visual language using vivid colours and bold geometric patterning.\u201d<\/p>\n Also at SAG this month, Art by Surrey Elementary School Students showcases the work of young artists until May 3, and Atheana Picha\u2019s Portals merges weaving, carving and sound until March 22.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, on the library building at Surrey Civic Plaza, the gallery\u2019s UrbanScreen digital art venue features Dana Claxton\u2019s The Bead in March and first week of April.
