York Regional Police are investigating after an Iranian-owned business in Thornhill was hit by gunfire early Sunday morning.<\/p>\n
Officers were called to the area of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue West at approximately 3 a.m. for reports of a shooting.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival, investigators located evidence of gunfire directed at the building and say it was unoccupied at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
Footage from the scene shows the front entrance of Saliwan Boxing gym adorned with Iranian flags and posters. The shooting left the establishment with substantial damage, including multiple shattered windows.<\/p>\n
Police told CityNews they believe the incident may be targeted and an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe motive behind the shooting is unknown and there is no suspect information at this time,\u201d a police spokesperson wrote in a statement. \u201cInvestigators from our Firearms Investigations Team continue to canvass the area for any security camera footage around the time of the shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Witnesses tell CityNews that the gym is a site where members of the\u00a0Iranian diaspora had gathered to plan rallies and protests in support of those calling for regime change within Iran over the past few months.<\/p>\n
