Canadian flights resumed this past week after the violent events<\/a> that occurred in the early hours of last weekend in Mexican cities such as Puerto Vallarta. <\/p>\n

The resort city along the Pacific Ocean started to reopen this past week after days of violence and unrest sparked by the killing of a Mexican cartel boss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Canadian travellers, however, remain anxious about visiting Mexico, while some are still trying to get home. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Calm returns by caution urged <\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, in a press release, predicted Mexico would become more stable in the following days. <\/p>\n

Yet Anand urged Canadian travellers to continue to use caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation remains fluid,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to assure Canadians that we\u2019re leaving no stone unturned to ensure that we\u2019re providing the most accurate advice possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Global Affairs Canada still advises Canadian travellers to avoid non-essential travel in key regions and exercise a high degree of caution throughout the whole country.<\/a> <\/p>\n

This has left some security experts urging<\/a> Canadians to reconsider travelling to Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it is safe for Canadians to return to Mexico,\u201d said Amelia Kiddle, a professor at the University of Calgary who specializes in the political history of Mexican foreign relations. \u201cAlthough this may negatively affect some tourists\u2019 perception of safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kiddle suggests that the recent violence shouldn\u2019t deter from a closer collaboration between the two nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada and Mexico are partners, and our relations are growing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Canadians witness violence in Mexico <\/p>\n

Kiara McQuaker-MacDonald saw smoke billowing from the Malec\u00f3n in Puerto Vallarta after the violence erupted last Sunday. <\/p>\n

The group of six included five adults and one child. <\/p>\n

The family had return flights home to Cochrane booked for the next day. <\/p>\n

But, airlines cancelled flights due to the ongoing civil unrest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAt day nine, I was ready to come home. Now we\u2019re almost at two weeks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Frustrating experience booking flights out of Mexico<\/p>\n

McQuaker-MacDonald added that airlines have been giving her the run-around. <\/p>\n

Confirmation or rebooking information has well exceeded the 48-hour communication promise. <\/p>\n

The informationshe gets varies depending on the representative she is speaking with.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody had reached out to us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing upwards of $12,000, $20,000, 21-hour flights, 36-hour-long flights, and it\u2019s just been a complete nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Air Canada<\/a>, WestJet<\/a>, and Air Transat<\/a> publicly announced that they would resume flights and bring stranded travellers back to Canada. <\/p>\n

Three adults in the group are on medications for heart conditions, diabetes, and high blood pressure. <\/p>\n

McQuaker-MacDonald says these medications have \u201cessentially run out.\u201d <\/p>\n

The family has been working with local and Canadian pharmacies to receive the necessary paperwork for the medications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The family is expected to fly out of Mexico today or tomorrow. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Global Affairs reminds Canadians<\/a> planning trips south of the border to stay informed, remain cautious, and prepare for potential disruptions as the situation continues to develop.<\/p>\n
