(Photo courtesy of Peyton Dyer-Aknavigak)<\/p>\n<p>Peyton Dyer-Aknavigak says she\u2019s \u201chonoured and a little anxious\u201d after being named as Nunavut\u2019s flag-bearer for the opening ceremony of the Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse on March 8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrying the flag in that moment and being a part of something everyone will remember is spectacular,\u201d said Dyer-Aknavigak, a centre on the Nunavut women\u2019s basketball team.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Cambridge Bay, she\u2019s currently studying at Mount Royal University in Calgary, preparing to pursue a career in emergency services or midwifery.<\/p>\n<p>She was nominated as flag-bearer by her coaches Olivia Tapatai and Megan Hachey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey not only believe that I can represent Nunavut, but also bring the energy, passion and determination that Team Nunavut will bring to the Games,\u201d said Dyer-Aknavigak, who has been involved with the Cambridge Bay <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/cambridge-bay-earns-double-victories-at-nunavut-basketball-championships\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wolverines basketball team<\/a> off and on for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of my parents are coaches, so I grew up travelling with them for tournaments, camps and clinics, helping with their fundraisers, attending their practices \u2014 stuff like that,\u201d she said of her mom Daisy Eyegetok and dad Terry Aknavigak.<\/p>\n<p>The Nunavut women\u2019s basketball team gelled while competing at the Canada Summer Games in St. John\u2019s, N.L., in August, Dyer-Aknavigak said. Many of those players will be on the court in Whitehorse.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260227-qulliq-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/A-14705.94.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a pretty great team,\u201d she said. \u201cWe work well together and we understand how to play together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Nunavut women\u2019s and men\u2019s basketball teams are scheduled to meet up in Yellowknife on March 4 to train before heading to the Games in Whitehorse.<\/p>\n<p>Nunavut is sending 313 participants to the Arctic Winter Games, including 219 athletes competing in 14 sports.
