A summary of the recent Flames trade rumours and chatter ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline<\/p>\n

Friends, welcome to the week of the 2026 National Hockey League trade deadline.<\/p>\n

The league\u2019s annual deadline for swaps between teams is 1 p.m. MT on Friday. (Trades made after that point are technically allowed, but players swapped after that point aren\u2019t eligible to play in the NHL\u2019s post-season.)<\/p>\n

Anyway, there\u2019s a lot of chatter out there regarding the Calgary Flames. To set the table for what could be a pretty eventful next few days, here\u2019s how things are sitting as of late on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

The big picture<\/p>\n

The Flames are doing what they\u2019ve been doing for the past while: looking for opportunities to get younger, add picks and prospects, and transition younger players onto their NHL roster.<\/p>\n

They want to keep some veterans, as they feel having the right individuals to guide their youngsters is beneficial for their development. They are willing to make trades, but they\u2019re looking for trades with good value rather than just shoving guys overboard to get younger or making trades just to make trades.<\/p>\n

Potentially on the move<\/p>\n

Blake Coleman<\/p>\n

Coleman is #2 on The Athletic\u2019s trade board, #4 on The Fourth Period\u2019s, is on Tier 1 on Daily Faceoff\u2019s board, and was listed on Nick Kypreos\u2019 list.<\/p>\n

Coleman has one season left after this one with a $4.9 million cap hit. He has a 10 team trade list on his deal, but all indications are that he\u2019s willing to work with the Flames to find a mutually beneficial landing spot. Coleman\u2019s cap hit isn\u2019t overly prohibitive and he\u2019s a player pretty much every contender would covet based on his playing style and Stanley Cup pedigree. He\u2019s a strong player, and probably one the Flames can\u2019t afford to hold onto right now.<\/p>\n

Ryan Lomberg<\/p>\n

Lomberg is on Tier 1 on Daily Faceoff\u2019s trade board and listed as a bubble player on The Fourth Period\u2019s list.<\/p>\n

Sportsnet\u2019s Eric Francis wrote a piece earlier this week<\/a> where he interviewed Lomberg and laid out his situation. Lomberg\u2019s beloved by fans and teammates and he would really like to stick around. But he\u2019s also a veteran who could provide some nice depth for a contender, and moving him could open up another spot for a younger player down the stretch and get the Flames an asset back. Lomberg\u2019s a pending unrestricted free agent with a $2 million cap hit.<\/p>\n

Brayden Pachal and\/or Joel Hanley<\/p>\n

Steinberg has mentioned the possibility of one or both of Pachal or Hanley being moved on Flames Talk in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

Pachal and Hanley are both depth defenders with another season remaining on their current deals; Pachal has a $1,187,500 cap hit and Hanley\u2019s is $1.75 million. Moving one of them would allow the Flames to bring up Hunter Brzustewicz from the AHL and give him regular games. Neither of them would be huge needle-movers for another team so the price tag wouldn\u2019t be high, but both are reliable players that could provide a contender with effective depth.<\/p>\n

Less likely, but possible<\/p>\n

Zach Whitecloud<\/p>\n

Whitecloud is #35 on The Athletic\u2019s trade board, Tier 2 on Daily Faceoff\u2019s, and a bubble player on The Fourth Period\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The Flames acquired Whitecloud in the Rasmus Andersson trade<\/a> and he\u2019s been quite good. Per Sportsnet\u2019s Elliotte Friedman, Whitecloud\u2019s indicated to the Flames that he\u2019d be open to sticking around \u2013 he was enthusiastic when chatting with the media about coming to a Western Canadian market, as he\u2019s from Manitoba \u2013 and so we don\u2019t think the Flames are in a hurry to move him. That said, other teams would probably be interested in him for similar reasons as the Flames were: he\u2019s under contract for two more seasons at a very affordable $2.75 million cap hit, and he\u2019s someone that can play in a team\u2019s top two pairings and perform well.<\/p>\n

Morgan Frost<\/p>\n

Frost is #43 on The Athletic\u2019s trade board.<\/p>\n

Frost hasn\u2019t come up often in media trade discourse, but he has a year left after this season at a $4.375 million cap hit. He has no trade protection this season, but he has an eight team no-trade list that kicks in on July 1. Frost\u2019s a centre, and the Flames are lean on that in their pro system, but it\u2019s not abundantly clear where he fits into the Flames\u2019 long-term plans. If another team thinks they can unlock Frost\u2019s potential, perhaps the Flames consider it.<\/p>\n

Maybe in the summer<\/p>\n

Nazem Kadri<\/p>\n

Kadri is #5 on The Athletic\u2019s trade board, #1 on The Fourth Period\u2019s, is Tier 1 on Daily Faceoff\u2019s list and is listed on Nick Kypreos\u2019.<\/p>\n

Even less likely<\/p>\n

MacKenzie Weegar<\/p>\n

Weegar is #30 on The Fourth Period\u2019s trade board, is on Tier 2 of Daily Faceoff\u2019s, and is on Nick Kypreos\u2019 list.<\/p>\n

Is Weegar having a good year? No, not really. But Weegar\u2019s a big part of the Flames\u2019 current leadership group, a group that\u2019s already lost Andersson and seems primed to lose Kadri and Coleman in the near future. From a continuity standpoint, the Flames probably want to keep Weegar. Heck, Weegar\u2019s probably in line to become captain after Mikael Backlund retires. We wouldn\u2019t say Weegar won\u2019t be traded \u2013 anyone can be traded if a price is met \u2013 but we\u2019re just saying that the Flames value Weegar highly and probably wouldn\u2019t be in a hurry to move on from him.<\/p>\n

And even if they were looking to move Weegar, we\u2019re not sure if trading Weegar in the middle of a rough year would match their mindset of trying to maximize asset value.<\/p>\n
