And there\u2019s a Japan-themed park in Mississauga, too. What might seem like an odd connection actually has a sweet, unifying story behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Who knew that one of Ontario\u2019s most populous cities had a direct connection with another, over 10,000 km away? According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/our-organization\/about-our-organization\/sister-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City of Mississauga<\/a>, Kariya, Japan, has been its sister city since 1981.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sister city initiative began in the 1950s as a way to promote communication between cities around the world,\u201d reads the story. \u201cThe original goal was to reduce conflict between nations in the aftermath of World War II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having a sister city offers a cultural and educational exchange opportunity for students, businesses and City staff, according to the City.<\/p>\n<p>It also amplifies its global reputation and trade. \u201cOver 100 Japanese companies now contribute to our local economy in Mississauga, more than any other city in Canada,\u201d shares the City\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Kariya Park in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada<\/p>\n<p>So if you wanted to visit Japan without breaking the bank, make your way to 3620 Kariya Dr. Kariya Park boasts a stunning Japanese garden located in downtown Mississauga.<\/p>\n<p>Here you\u2019ll find Japanese-style gardens, pavilions, cherry trees, rhododendrons, and several sculptures gifted by Kariya City.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-loaded size-full wp-image-248140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Kariya-Park-Mississauga.jpg\" alt=\"Kariya Park Mississauga\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\"  \/>Photo via Shawn.ccf on Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>It comes alive in the spring as cherry blossoms bloom and magnolia trees paint its landscape.<\/p>\n<p>In July 1992, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/events-and-attractions\/parks\/kariya-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City<\/a> opened Kariya Park to honour the sister city partnership.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s open daily from dawn to 11 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Mississauga Park in Kariya, Japan<\/p>\n<p>As for Japan, Mississauga Park is as Canadian as it can get.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mississauga-park.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official park website<\/a>, translated from Japanese to English, \u201cMississauga Park (Saruwatari Park) was developed to commemorate the friendship between Kariya City and its sister city, Mississauga, Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It features\u00a0grassy plazas, plantings centred around coniferous and broadleaf evergreen trees, and log cabin-style restrooms and rest areas.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also spot a miniature replica of Mississauga\u2019s City Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-loaded size-full wp-image-248138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/mississauga-park-japan.jpg\" alt=\"Mississauga Park, Kariya, Japan\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\"  \/>Photo via Riley Kemp on Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>In addition to that, there\u2019s a maple leaf structure, which at one point was used in front of the Canada Pavilion at the 2005 World Expo. It was donated by Canada after the expo ended.<\/p>\n<p>And, according to the City of Mississauga, there\u2019s a sculpture of a bear by Canadian artist John McEwen.<\/p>\n<p>By the looks of it, you won\u2019t have to travel far to enjoy the beauty of Japan.
