The one in his left hand referred to Patrick Brown as a \u201cSlum Mayor\u201d, and the one in his right hand called for \u201cNo More Dictators at City Hall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Under that wording, Goyat had written, \u201cBrampton Open For Residents Not Corruption!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the other placard criticizing the mayor, he wrote: &#8220;Do Your Job Not Corruption&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A vocal critic of Brown, Goyat recently helped expose an alarming property purchase by the City of Brampton pushed by the mayor, who demanded the acquisition of a former Alectra Utilities building at 175 Sandalwood Parkway for $78 million in 2023; after it had been sold by the public utility company three years earlier to a Brampton businessman Brown gave the citizen of the year award to, for $32.5 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the summer, Goyat provided documents to The Pointer detailing the unusual property transactions. Brown and City officials have refused to cooperate with details of the deal that were kept from the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Pointer is still investigating the matter, which has frustrated Goyat. He said his protest was an effort to call out \u201coverall corruption\u201d inside City Hall, and draw attention to other concerning issues including Brown\u2019s handling of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2025-06-28\/brampton-expanding-its-controversial-landlord-licensing-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the City\u2019s Residential Rental Licensing program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Brampton resident was arrested and charged with trespassing. He claims that because his demonstration remained non-violent\u2014merely holding placards\u2014the arrest violated his Charter rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were not shouting; we were not yelling. We were not speaking a single word, just holding the banners,&#8221; Goyat said in an interview with The Pointer. &#8220;They (City Security) told me to leave. I said, \u2018No, we can&#8217;t. We don&#8217;t want to go because that&#8217;s public property, and we have a right to peaceful protest. It&#8217;s a civil liberty; you cannot remove us from the property.\u2019 Then, they called the cops, and when they arrived, they warned me to leave the property. When I said no, they arrested me and issued a trespassing ticket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The protest occurred during a live broadcast of CP24\u2019s holiday interview with Santa Claus. Goyat, along with three others, stood behind the broadcast holding signs protesting Brown\u2019s leadership and urging residents to \u201cfight for your rights\u201d. Goyat said the group was not interrupting the broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They put four or five bikes in front of us. We were just standing. I told them that I have the right to protest peacefully, and I&#8217;m not disturbing anybody. The City of Brampton also did not respond to requests for details about the reasons City security notified police about the small, peaceful protest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brown did not directly respond when asked about Goyat&#8217;s allegations that his arrest was politically motivated and that critics of the mayor are being silenced for raising concerns about\u00a0corruption under his leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the one arrest; even 100 arrests cannot stop me. I&#8217;m speaking for the people. I was not standing there for myself. I was protesting for the people of Brampton,\u201d Goyat said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s leadership in Brampton has repeatedly been marked with scandals that have sometimes motivated residents to His shocking move was described as a \u201cvery high-level cover up\u201d by the councillors who had ordered the external probes.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Ombudsman directed Brown and his colleagues to restart the investigations, before <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2023-05-19\/patrick-brown-publicly-lies-about-cancelled-investigations-after-ombudsman-calls-for-city-hall-to-renew-probes-into-mayor-s-conduct\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brown lied about what the Ombudsman had said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The group of six councillors who had voted for the investigations wrote in a blistering public letter in 2022 that Brampton taxpayers were \u201cat risk from financial and administrative mismanagement,\u201d describing Brown as an \u201cauthoritarian dictator.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Questionable Brampton University plan goes dark after more than $600K handed to Brown and Santos associates\" border=\"0\" height=\"670\" hspace=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/6927bcd79a154.jpg\" style=\"width:900px;height:670px;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;border:0px solid black;\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"900\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Mayor Patrick Brown and Councillor Rowena Santos. Friends and associates of theirs received hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars for a university plan that never materialized. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">(City of Brampton)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current council has had to manage damning allegations of wrongdoing in contract procurements, investigations of improper hiring practices, and concerns over discrimination,\u201d the letter highlighted. \u201cWe can no longer continue to stay quiet,\u201d they wrote, vowing to take legislative action to confront Brown\u2019s alarming behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>When t<a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2022-08-31\/a-very-high-level-cover-up-with-mounting-evidence-of-wrongdoing-under-his-leadership-patrick-brown-terminates-sweeping-city-hall-forensic-investigation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he half-dozen external investigations they eventually launched, under the recommendation of Ontario\u2019s Ombudsman, were later cancelled by Brown<\/a>, it appeared he and his main council ally Councillor Rowena Santos\u2014she was also singled out in the preliminary investigation report for helping a friend win a contract\u2014were in a conflict when they voted to torpedo the probe which involved allegations against them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2022-07-06\/patrick-brown-disqualified-by-cpc-for-alleged-use-of-campaign-staff-paid-by-third-party-cancels-another-council-meeting-evidence-shows-he-was-guilty-of-similar-conduct-inside-city-hall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative Party of Canada disqualified Brown<\/a> from its leadership race, alleging wrongdoing including payments to campaign workers that were not allowed and the use of funds to pay for new memberships. The matter is still being investigated by federal election authorities.<\/p>\n<p>It had previously been revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2022-08-23\/brampton-integrity-commissioner-report-shows-patrick-brown-used-7-city-staff-on-his-cpc-election-campaign-without-approval\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brown was secretly using City of Brampton staff<\/a> to work on his federal campaign, which <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2022-07-15\/patrick-brown-refuses-to-answer-questions-on-his-use-of-city-staff-resources\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he had refused to explain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All five members who voted to cancel the investigations, including Brown, are still on council: Santos, Harkirat Singh, Paul Vicente and Michael Palleschi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They were joined by new members after the 2022 municipal election and all of them have fallen in line with the mayor (councillors Martin Medeiros and Pat Fortini have at times tried to raise concerns since then, but have been unable to get motions passed with nine members, led by Brown, lined up against them).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Ombudsman has tried to get council members to reopen the sweeping allegations, but has blatantly lied about the Ombudsman\u2019s position, claiming the provincial watchdog cleared him and other officials of any wrongdoing. <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2023-05-19\/patrick-brown-publicly-lies-about-cancelled-investigations-after-ombudsman-calls-for-city-hall-to-renew-probes-into-mayor-s-conduct\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The provincial ombudsman stated in a letter that the investigations should be resumed<\/a> to determine if wrongdoing had occurred. Brown has ignored the direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the investigations he was implicated in, which he himself cancelled,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thepointer.com\/article\/2022-09-24\/questionable-brampton-university-plan-goes-dark-after-more-than-600k-handed-to-brown-and-santos-associates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was the Brampton University scandal,<\/a> which saw Brown and Councillor Rowena Santos exposed for handing more than $600,000 of taxpayer money to close friends and associates for the planning of a future university in the city that never materialized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Goyat said Brampton residents need to vote Brown out next year, to save their city.
