SYDNEY \u2013 Canada\u2019s defence minister David McGuinty says Canadian military personnel in the Middle East are out of harm\u2019s way.<\/p>\n

McGuinty did not answer when asked how many Canadian military personnel are in the region, saying only there are \u201csome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are all fine, out of harm\u2019s way, and it\u2019s something that we\u2019re watching very carefully,\u201d McGuinty told reporters in Sydney, Australia, where he is on a visit with Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n

McGuinty said that the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is a positive development.<\/p>\n

\u201cAyatollah Khamenei has been for many, many decades a very, very powerful force for evil in Iran and in the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Carney has endorsed the American and Israeli military strikes on Iran, but said that Canada would not get involved.<\/p>\n

McGuinty said the Canadian Armed Forces weren\u2019t involved in the preparation or execution of the attack, and that Canada was not given advance notice.<\/p>\n

He says the government \u201cdecided from the beginning\u201d it would support the attack, but is also calling for a diplomatic end to the conflict.<\/p>\n
