We notice five new restaurants got a special nod<\/a> in Edify’s annual Best Restaurants issue<\/a>, two of which are in the Brewery District. Next of Kin<\/a> is a basement bar from Ben Staley<\/a> of Hoot Company<\/a> that opened three years after he swore off chef life upon his exit from Yarrow in 2022. Edify notes the bar’s 1970s atmosphere, inventive cocktails, and tightly curated food menu. Its neighbour, Nero<\/a>, also earned Edify’s praise. Liane Faulder said the concept transports diners to Rome with a “pomp” that differs from its sister restaurants Rosso<\/a> and Bianco<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Atrium at Sabor<\/a>, which is part of the restaurant group’s commitment to downtown<\/a>, was also hailed as a great new restaurant, notable for its intimate vibe, piano entertainment, and a menu that includes a raw bar and elevated comfort food. Far outside of the core is JUU-KU<\/a>, Andrew Fung’s new concept next to his XIX Nineteen<\/a> in the Mactaggart neighbourhood in southwest Edmonton. Edify notes its art gallery vibes and extensive menu that spans Asian cuisine with an east-meets-west panache. And the globe-trotting menu at Westmount’s Golden Sparrow<\/a> by Oman-reared chef Taimoor Mirza also attracted praise, as did the decor described as at once luxe and intimate.<\/p>\n

Perhaps not surprisingly, dishes from some of those restaurants made The Tomato’s annual list of the best things to eat in Edmonton. Nero’s tagliata flank steak and Next of Kin’s burger are in the top 50<\/a>, at numbers 22 and 25, respectively, while JUU-KU’s crispy sushi bites are ranked 55th<\/a>.<\/p>\n
