Ozzfest will \u201cabsolutely\u201d return in 2027, according to its founder Sharon Osbourne<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The British music mogul and TV personality, who managed and was married to Ozzfest\u2019s namesake headliner Ozzy Osbourne<\/a> from 1982 until his death last year, confirms in a new interview with RIFFX that the travelling heavy metal festival will come back next year. It last took place in 2018, as a one-day event at The Forum in Inglewood, California.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, absolutely. Yeah, we\u2019re gonna do it,\u201d she says (via Blabbermouth<\/a>). \u201cWell, the last one we did was 2018. It was just a month before Ozzy got sick [with a staph infection in his thumb], and that was at the Forum in L.A. And there was no plans to stop it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were still gonna do it, but Ozzy couldn\u2019t. And Ozzy and I would talk about it, and he\u2019d say, \u2018Do you think Ozzfest would work without me?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, it\u2019s a brand. It will work without you.\u2019 And he said, \u2018We should do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The news follows comments that Sharon made earlier this year during a discussion with Billboard, where she revealed that she was in talks with Live Nation about the comeback<\/a>. She said that, should the festival return, it would do so with a lineup that looks beyond its typical niche of rock and metal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was something Ozzy was very passionate about: giving young talent a stage in front of a lot of people,\u201d she said. \u201cWe really started metal festivals in this country. It was [replicated but] never done with the spirit of what ours was, because ours was a place for new talent. It was like summer camp for kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon started Ozzfest in 1996, after fellow travelling festival Lollapalooza refused to give Ozzy a spot on their lineup. The inaugural edition was a two-day tour with dates in Phoenix, Arizona and San Bernardino, California. Ozzy headlined with support from Slayer<\/a>, Danzig, Biohazard, Sepultura<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n

As nu metal began to pick up steam in the late 90s, Ozzfest became famous for putting up-and-coming artists on its bill. Such acts as Slipknot<\/a>, Limp Bizkit<\/a> and System Of A Down<\/a> all performed on the festival tour either around or shortly after the release of their debut albums. Ozzfest expanded to have international offshoots in markets including the UK, Germany, Belgium and Japan before hosting its final incarnation \u2013 a single show in Inglewood, California \u2013 in 2018.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Sharon explained why Ozzfest went away<\/a>, saying on her family podcast The Osbournes that other managers got greedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a very weird beast,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause all the bands were our mates, but the managers were greedy, and for some reason they thought that we were making billions on it and we weren\u2019t. We made a profit. But it was not like \u2013 we couldn\u2019t retire on it. And managers and agents wanted more and more and more, and it just wasn\u2019t cost-effective anymore. We stopped because it just wasn\u2019t cost-effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the following year, she added that \u201cof course\u201d Ozzfest can return one day<\/a>. \u201cYou can do it for a baby stage, but you still need the headliners,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s always great to have the baby stage, I mean, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about \u2013 breaking new bands. That\u2019s why we did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ozzy died at the age of 76 following a cardiac arrest on July 22 last year. He passed just 17 days after playing his retirement show at a one-day festival in his honour, Back To The Beginning<\/a>, where the bill was rounded out by the likes of Metallica<\/a>, Anthrax<\/a>, Lamb Of God<\/a> and Gojira<\/a>. Ozzy did sets with both his solo band and Black Sabbath, and all proceeds from the gig, held at Villa Park stadium in his hometown of Birmingham, went to local charities.<\/p>\n
