An animal rescue group based in Calgary needs a little help after taking in dozens of guinea pigs, some of which needed serious medical care.<\/p>\n
Members of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) say they took in 50 guinea pigs. After conducting PCR tests on the animals, eight of them tested positive for ringworm, causing financial strain on the not-for-profit.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re projecting to pay at least $10,000 just in testing alone,\u201d said Amy Corpe, the director of animal health at AARCS.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat doesn\u2019t cover the cost of the vet exams that we\u2019re paying for, the medication that we\u2019re paying for, the food, the vitamin C, the hay.\u201d<\/p>\n
Because the other 40 have been exposed to ringworm, they also require preventative care. AARCS says two of the really sick ones were let go.<\/p>\n
To be cleared for adoption, AARCS says each guinea pig will need two negative tests two weeks apart.<\/p>\n
Corpe says a breeder contacted AARCS asking for help, and the group agreed to offer support and take in the animals.<\/p>\n
She also adds that despite the cost, AARCS views all lives as equal.<\/p>\n
